What not to do?
Now that health problems are in the rear view mirror its looking like we will be moving to the Kenai Peninsula this summer. I have seen lotsa people say dont bring Cali. with you. You dont need to worry about the politics as thats a major reason we are leaving but what other attitudes are you refering to?
I know with my mother born and raised in Cali, when she moved to Utah the hardest thing for her was every one looking her in the eye! In Cali. thats subconscious aggresive behavior!
Thoughts?

Don't:
Try to change anything or anyone for at least 5 years. It's not like back home for a reason.
Be surprised to see mobile homes, next to shacks, next to $300,000 homes. And all of them living harmoniously together.
Judge anyone by what they wear or drive. Some of these old-timers wear oil stained overalls and drive beater trucks, but they are very well off.
Ignore people when they greet you with a smile. They expect a greeting and smile in return.
Give up easily after you arrive. It takes awhile sometimes to let the country in.
All in All, I think you will do well here. After a few months you will feel at home.

I like the fact that I usually run into people I know at the stores. Anywhere. I also like the fact that usually, I can find people who know the same people I do. My competitors are also customers and/or vendors. I can quite easily tell a customer to call my competitor because the markup for whatever I might sell through my competitor to my customer will make the cost excessive. And most of the people in my business are friendly instead of cut-throat.
Remember though, buy Alaska first.

The biggest mental shift for me everytime I leave the city to go to Alaska is to slow down... don't walk so fast, don't drive so fast, don't think so fast, don't talk so fast. We're so conditioned by the L48 cities to hurry through our days and lives that we rarely enjoy them... that's just not the case in Alaska. So my advice is "Don't rush".

One more thing - don't offer to pay when someone buys you a welcome gift.

And while it may seem difficult to locate the items that you want being made in Alaska, you'll be surprised by the range of products produced here.

Do not engage in conversation were you proceed to tell an Alaskan how things are done in the lower 48. First off, most do not care and second you will get "This is not the lower 48"...

And now, the mother of all "Don'ts" -
Don't listen to people who write posts on C-D that contains the word "Don't..."
