Gives me visions of all the city folk from the lower 48 coming up trying to get the "real" Alaska experience - maybe trying in some way to live the Dick Proenneke adventure. BTW, I always take it for granted that other's are familiar with the Proenneke story, but I guess I shouldn't. If you've never heard of him, I would
HIGHLY recommend reading the book
AND watching the DVD. If that doesn't inspire you about Alaska, nothing will!

Mass tourism is a slippery slope. Once the locals get hooked on to the easy money that it brings, it can quickly spin out of control. What perhaps saves Alaska from the corrosive effects of mass tourism are the harsh weather conditions for much of the year, which discourage the casual drive-by visitor.
