My wife and are flying into Anchorage on June 23, driving (renting an RV) to Fairbanks, flying to Barrow the 24th, and returning to Fairbanks the 25th. We RV until the 30th. My question is, should we stock up in Eagle River as we had planned or wait until we get back from Barrow and buy our supplies in Fairbanks? Is Fairbanks that much more expensive than Eagle River? We'll need a few things the first couple days but most would just sit in the RV until we get back from Barrow. Any advice would be appreciated!

Just get your things in Fairbanks, might be cheaper. Have lunch or dinner somewhere up the highway. Stop in at Mile 49.5 Roadside Inn just outside of Palmer, good food. If you aren't hungry early in the day, drive on up to Clear Sky Ranch just outside Anderson and have yourself a great burger. Farther up the road past Nenana is the Monderossa, good burgers, too!

Buy in Fairbanks, cost difference negligable and no sales tax. Fred Meyers or Safeway just as you come off the Parks Hwy into Fairbanks at Airport road.
Wasilla Wal-mart has always had a nicer quality of merchandise than the ones in Anchorage or Fairbanks. Strange but true.

Plenty of tourists visit here from all over the world, including the dreaded "Bay Area". . Some of them even come from different countries...socialist ones at that and from Europe and everywhere, even China. For the most part they all have a great time, as I'm sure the OP will Don't mean to sound harsh but your advice would be better given to someone coming here for a job than to a well traveled tourist.

Stop at the bus on the Parks...Warpt, what was the milepost again?

The Bus! How can I forget? Don't know the mile but it's the Blue Bus right before the Long Lake Road cut off and right after the first gas station to the left on top of the hill before Willow.

The bus is great.

OP--consider taking a little side trip into Talkeetna--about mile 99 on the Parks and 15 or so miles down the spur road--right by a carving of a bear that's covered with bullet holes.

I'd take arctic's advice on the Wal*Mart thing; don't patronize them myself but other than that, just keep on driving through Whitesilla and you'll get to Alaska soon enough.
