When i was up there i was told you could tell when winter was starting by the fireweed. I assume it was when the blooms went away winter was starting?? Wives tale or true?

True enough, in a way. The blooms start about 7-10 inches from the tip and blossom as the summer moves on. When the very tip is finished blooming, you'll know that colder temps are around the corner.

I've tried cutting off the tops before, but it still gets cold a few weeks later anyway. Oh well...

A lot of old wives tales have truth in them; there's truth in this one. You can usually count on termination dust about two weeks after the fireweed are bloomed out---except in SE; the first snow varies here.

saw tons of it about 20 miles north of the Yukon crossing where all the burnt spruce is

found a pull off and let my tour group be consumed by mosquitoes MUAHAHAHA
