Welcome aboard MAINEr! I guess the Alaska forum is pretty friendly. Both Kenai and Soldotna would be a good choice for a place to live...I would consider moving there myself, but managed to snag a good job here in Seward. Probably will stay here until I retire (just 3 more years!....YEA!... )
I'm not a realtor, but I've heard home prices are moving DOWN now in some areas. Hopefully you won't end up losing 15k on your home sale, while striving to save the 15k from the loan...it would be like riding a merry-go-round to nowhere.

Bud

Yeah I know, since I my house is worth about 10k more than I paid for it now, I might be able to squeeze by to sell. Hubby hasn't worked in awhile so the savings doesn't do mch.

I may just disappear and end up there

Hey MaineR... I moved to AK a number of years ago - made sure I had a job first and shipped up 20 small boxes (12x12) of personal and household items for about $800. I'd made two long weekend visits up to check pricing and areas. Have been back in the L48 due to getting stuck between a job and 9/11. AK is "there" - that's true, but I'd highly recommend not waiting until a financial readiness to go. With a disintegrating US$ and a busting housing market, if you can sell and break even or even a bit under, the sooner the better! You'll make up for it with miles of smiles once you find yourself in AK. I've compared ME to AK - along it's rocky coastline, but AK ... offers so much more than you'll ever imagine sitting over 4,000 miles drive away. Sell as much as you can except your most sentimental "stuff" - you'll be able to find whatever you are needing once you arrive in AK. And use the monies from selling things to cover your transport. You won't regret it.
