Winter in Soldotna
Does Soldtona receive much snow in the winter? And does it really only get as light as dusk in the winter months?

Many of us in the lower 48 automatically think heavy snowfall for all of alaska, which is probably not the case.

Some years we get alot of snow...some years we don't. But the roads are maintained and we never have "snow days" here. School buses have automatic tire chains built right on them, that are activated from the drivers seat. You can get by without studded tires but they do help alot in winter. Lot's of driveway plow service around. Sometimes you have to get on the roof and shovel the snow load off.

Sounds like my kind of place! Winter weather/snowfall really does not bother me at all. As a matter of fact, I kinda look forward to it. Now, about the BEARS.....

There are many bears around the outskirts of town. Almost every year a hiker/jogger gets chewed on! I believe 2 incidents last spring and summer.

Yup! And as far as daylight...stays very light out at night in the summer. The sun don't go down for long. Gets dark early in winter, but there is a couple hours of sun this far south.
DOn't worry about bears...unless of course your a jogger!

Thanks for the info. What, in your opinion, would be one of the biggest adjustments for someone moving to Soldotna or Sterling from a city like Detroit or Chicago?

Much less crime and crowds, some people actually miss the thrill and excitement of the "loot, shoot & scoot" events that take place almost every weekend in the "Windy City" and "Motown"
