It's been my understanding that brown bear meat is basically uneatable. The grease is used for certain things and supposedly makes the best pie crust though.

It's like the difference between corn fed beef and Kobe steak. They are what they eat.

Actually black bears eat more of the baby moose than the brownies. Both species eat meat and vegies. Some of both species eat fish from the rivers...the high country bears eat more berries than fish, and both eat on whatever live game they can catch.
One day we were at a local lake. Nice sunny spring day with 10 or so people in the parking lot. Suddenly a moose calf come running from the woods and leaps into the lake, swimming out toward the middle. A few seconds later here comes momma moose from the woods, and she just kinda runs around the parking lot, seconds behind her this big brown bear comes out of the woods, bolts across the parking lot (and I mean right through vehicles and people) leaps into the lake, over takes the calf in just a couple seconds, grabs the calf, turns and swims back to shore, crawls out of the lake and runs off into the woods. There was ladies crying and kids screaming and it was just unbelieveable.
But black bears take like 80% of the moose calves that are killed.

80% is a huge number Rance are you sure about that , whats the bear count & is there a quota system or just go for it n hunt them at will. The food chain pecking order can be that savage i guess.

Wife has told me that in upper MI they only hand out a few permits a year = to the number they want hunted to keep the bear count under control.

Tellya what , im over the moon im not a bear , altho i may look like one , ill be keeping my cute ass in doors when bear hunting season is on.....LOL
