I hear you Rance loud and clear, but we have a 3 year old daughter. So I can't afford to rely on blind faith Know what I mean? If it was us by ourselves hell I'll backpack up there, We do plan to take a trip there. Shoo I could get a military hop for free. So that isn't the issue. It's just that is a far place to go with no plan. |

I'm here because I'm stuck here. Why? Because I chose to move here when I let others (family) influence my decision when I was younger and had several places I could go. I listened to them, moved here, and now 22 years later I can't leave due to financial reasons among others. It's a lesson that if you ever get the opportunity to go where your heart wants to go, you may only get that chance once in your life. If you screw up, poof - that's it. I'll probably grow old and die here, always knowing that if I hadn't allowed others to influence me, I may have wound up a much happier person. Remember, being near family is nice, but, YOU are the one living your life - not your family. |

Sorry to hear that Atlantagreg, you are absolutely right. Financially though Atlanta is the best choice right now, not saying it's permanent but that's where we have to go right now. What's the alternative? Leaving him and going back to NYC, until I can afford to go to Alaska? (No that's crazy talk
Alaska will always be there. We just can't go right now. I always wanted to see Atlanta anyway. I heard nothing but good things about it, besides what your telling me now. I'm sorry you didn't get to go where your heart desired. Anywho on my end my Guard base is transfering me to Dobbins so I don't have a choice either, it's not just him. I will make the best of it. It's got to be better than where I am now![]() |

NorthFace, I understand your financial constaints. I no how hard it is to save for the future in this time and age. But save U must or U will live from hand to mouth most your life. And then U will never be able to afford that dream trip to Alaska. Get as much schooling as humanly possible even if U have to sacrifice the new car, TV, cell ph and etc. This fatherly advice is from a person who was nearly on welfare when jobs in aerospace were scarce as hens teeth decades back. Now, I am proud to say I've put all 5 of my kids thru college who now, in turn, have so far put 2 of their kids thru college. I am not saying college are a necessity but it helps. U can always work down. It is much tougher to work up. Still, there are plenty of non degree persons who are very successful and there are mucho jobs around that pays very well.
Keep dreaming. U will make it and Good Luck. Where there is a will, there is a way |

Go into the Atlanta room and ask around for suggestions once you're ready. I won't go into tons of details here since it's an Alaska room, but I will tell you that the comment you made of "I've heard nothing but good things" about Atlanta might draw some interesting comments in that room. Realtors and corporate head hunters tout up Atlanta as being a holy grail of cities to move to, and when many people move here they wind up going, "Uh... this is IT???.. crime, traffic, lack of charactor.. this is it??". LOL> Lots of jobs here for sure, but you have to deal with a truckload of crap for it, too. But regardless, good luck. Maybe I'll make it to Alaska before you and meet you all there. LOL |

Wow, you sound like me! I moved here about 8 months ago and feel/fear exactly what you wrote! I am in my 20's and moved here because of my wifes family. I was living in CO and loved it but longed to move somewhere like Alaska.......and ended up in Atlanta. I screwed up badly and would give anything to at least get back to CO!

Hey NorthFace&Timbs,
Cheer up, I live a little north of Atlanta and can although it's not Alaska, there are some beautiful green open spaces especially outside of the city. I can be in the southern appalacian trail heading toward the blue ridge mountains in about hour and half and the north Georgia mountains are really beautiful. I do not go into the city often but can within a half hour south of me. Georgia actually has the atlantic coast with it's beautiful islands and the okeefenookee swamp in the south. Been here 13 years and still feel like I'm going home everytime I get to the mountains. So, even though it isnt Ak, get outdoors and up north and I'll bet you be happy you did. |

Once I graduate college I am going to travel accross the US to as many states as I can, trying to figure out what fits me best as a place to live. Do you think think this is a good idea?
