Dont move to Anchorage or anywhere near it. Moving to wasilla or palmer is alright, but you still have to commute to anchorage once in a while. For your kids don't do it. The rape rate here is VERY HIGH, and the crimerate is high among younger peeps. In fact Alaskas rape rate is very high period. Anchorage isn't a safe city anymore. It will be for a 30 year old, but for teenagers its not. You can bet that if you raise your kids here, and they become honor students, and you think they are the most perfect kids you know. They will probably be toking it up whenever they say they are going to a study group. Almost all teenagers I know around here smoke weed... oh wait did I say teenagers? I mean EVERYONE, ages range from 12 years old to infinity.
Anchorage is becoming a **** city, if you plan on ever socializing, going to clubs, or bars, or going to the mall, than anchorage is not a good choice. The malls at anchorage are flooded with gangsta wannabees on the weekends. Commuting around anchorage is flooded with lifted trucks with exhaust systems, people bumping their music to the max, and every A hole here tailgates you. Word of advice, if you do move up here, and some A hole ends up tailgating you, stay calm, dont try pissing the guy off. He'll probably pop one in your head. Murder rate isn't all that high here, but really messing with the wrong people and you can expect trouble... quick. Anchorage is also very congested and small, so you'll probably see the same person numerous times. Only 3 or so highschools are considered goody goody highschools, unfortunately everyone that goes to them are snobbs, driving around in their BMW's they got for their 16th birthday. I'm sorry if i want on too long, just had to vent.... I hate anchorage!!! Lived there for a long 15 years and i'm done. |

Wow, Leto, you are seriously unhappy here! Funny, all the things you describe of Anchorage have not happened to me or people I socialize with so much that it is even worth mentioning. I am raising my babies here in Anchorage and I know there is crime here, but there is in all cities around the country. I personally think that Anchorage is a great city to live in with lots of things to keep the kiddos entertained during the long cold winter months. I drive one of those big trucks you mention, but only to be able to plow in the winter and tow my boat in the summer... I have never been intimidated by a 'gansta', never been tailgated (maybe it is my tow hitch that scares them off!
) As for the weed thing: NONE of my friends or people I know smoke weed. Again, I think that is a national problem, not just limited to our beautifull state.Anyhow: I think Anchorage is a great city, but I would avoid Mountain View and Fair View with little kids. Turnagain, Campbell Creek, Muldoon, Midtown and South Side are OK areas for middle income people... |

Very well said. Everyone I know that lives in Anchorage...lives there because they like it. Those that don't like the city life (like me) don't live there.

I believe if you were a teenager you would have a different outlook, now i'm not sure for how it is for older adults, but for those who frequent out alot, many people will agree anchorage is getting less and less safe. Anchorage hasn't always been like this though, its changing, and its getting worse.. Last edited by Leto; 04-24-2007 at 01:40 AM.. |

The crowd you run with will determine what kind of atmosphere you get. There are a hundred things for teens to do other than bars and parties. Don't you ski? Work? Hobbies? (like cars) snowmachine? Ride bikes? Fish? Get the heck out of town any chance you get. Come on down to Sterling. I'll take you out on the lake or drag you up a mountain. Anchorage or city life is not for everyone. Pick another place to live or play. It soounds like you do need to change something in your life tho. Before it causes you any worse heartache.

well i thank you leto for your point of veiw but my kids are very young and it will be 2015 before one on the is a teenager. let me let you in on something since you have the internet or a tv have you ever seen the show the first 48 about real life murders if you have not go google and google the first 48 on a&e tv i am sure you have the channel and my city mempis is on there every week. memphis has one of the top murder rates in the nation and thats now can emagine when my kids are teenagers here wow. Oh and i am the guy with the jacked up truck I have a turbo deisel ford f-350 4x4 crew cab with all the bells on it i will probably need it up there. I dont get mad to fast either but if i happen to **** someone off i will just go on my way and let it go but if push comes to shove i am the proud owner of a 44 mag and a few 45's i do keep one in the door at all times when i am out and about. My kids will do what i raise them to do like we love to go camping, hiking, and fishing they dont hunt yet because my 6 year old would not unsterstand killing something but by the time he's 8 or 9 he will be. I hope that if i raise my kids with love and care with GOD in there life that they will turn out right but in the event they strt to stray doing drugs running away stuff like that I am not above tuff love and i will send there azz to boot camp for 6 months i am x-army myself and i know of a few nice boot camps for kids that do wrong. I dont plan on moving into the city i am looking at the kenai area hard and are 75% sure that were we will live. It seems to me leto that you have been the victom of something do people pick on you all the time or have you been raped or both i dont know but it sounds like you are not in a good place for your own well being ever thought of moving to the country I hope you find a place that works better for you and how old are you are you a teen yourself or what anyway just rember life is what you make it this is the usa you can be happy if you work hard and do right thats a fact. i know a guy that mover here from africa he had 500 bucks when he came and he's a lawyer now and has a great life he had no family here and lived in the worst part of new orleans for 7 years before he got out of school and now he lives in the best part of atlanta go figure

Hmm, Anchorage is HARDLY a horrible place. I have lived here for 8 years and I have yet to have any acts of violence happen to me, nor felt threatened. I have 2 teenage nieces who live here in Anchorage, and they are both wonderful kids. If you raise your kids well, and teach them right from wrong...then you should have no worries. As a matter of fact, as far as cities go, Anchorage is great. ALL cities have violence. It really does sound like you need to get out more, Leto. Geeze, in my opinion you live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Enjoy it.
