THANKS, Rance. I really don't think that some people understand that you can put your self in more danger with a gun than without one, in the case of grizzlies.

You have to be a bear whisper...er of sorts. I just grew up not needing a pistol. We always made so much dang noise as kids there was no critters for a mile in any direction. Now I just hollar "hello bear" all the time and rarely see one on a trail. But you can hear them crashing off into the brush quite often. But being near a running stream can still be nerve wracking. So much noise from the water you can't hear anything. Can still walk up on a bear.

Do those whispering skills work with airplanes? My nerves are wracked beyond belief trying to make arraignments to finally escape. On Alaska Airline's website it says it will take 11 hours to get to Anchorage from Ketchikan and that it will change planes in Seattle.

There are many of us gun owners that know safe handling of firearms and responsible use will not put us in any more danger with a gun than without one. Less than 1% of all guns are used irresponsibly or illegally, that means 99% are carried and used responsibly, that to me is pretty darn good safety record.

I wasn't talking about the responsibility of firearms owners so please don't get in a knot about it. or try to misrepresent whet I said. I was talking about grizzly bears and the fact that they do not always have a way of not falling down and dying when they are shot, and they tend to become rather unpleasant in these instances. Shooting one for your own protection should be an extreme last resort and you'd better damn well know what you're doing. Better to avoid having to make that choice, which is easy enough because as Rance said, they avoid noise.

I respect what you are saying and yes if you go into the woods with a .380 or .22 cal you are asking for trouble but when you can dump 10+ rounds of a .45 in a few seconds i doubt a grizzly would go very far but i am thinking of getting a 454 casull or a 45-70 I dont know if you are aware of what they are but they are used to hunt lion's water bufflo and rino's and they pack a very big punch about 400 grains and they come in multi shot revolver's and the are hand guns with only 7-8 inch barrels but dont get me wrong I think the grizz and other bears are wonderful animals and I only want to shoot what I eat but that being said i have 2 small kids and a wife, oh yeah and i am a gun happy x-Army guy so when me and my family go camping or hiking we have a set of rules that we go by. Our first line of defense is a air horn that will break your ear drums we will blow it a few times and if the bear or rogue animanl still is a danger then we have big cans of pepper spray the kind dog the bounty hunter uses but these are for animals they shoot up to 30 feet my wife and son are in charge of those they spray and i lock on with the 44 mag and if the animal keeps coming well i unload my 44mag or when i move up there my 45-70. we have been camping in the mountains many times and have come in contact with many bobcats and mountain lions oh and wild boars they are the worst we have never even had to spray one yet they run off with sound of the air horn but i have killed a few boars and cooked them over the camp fire. I am not a loose cannon that likes guns just a overly protective father and husband. I know that bears kill and mangle people every year thats just the facts you go into there world its going to happen but if your are going to put yourself in there home place at least you can be ready if they do try to kill you I bet all those people that got killed and mangled wished they would have had a fighting chance but face it if a grizz or lion really want to kill you the only hting that will stop them is a gun and a 45-70 or a 454 will kill just about anything on contact a 400 grain bullet comes out with over a ton of force on a 7 inch barrel. I am that guy that you see in the woods with a double shoulder holster and a ankle holster with a rifle strapped on his back just got to be readt for anything |

I know, lost life. But having to shoot a bear for protection isn't an ordinary and common part of life up here; very rare actually. The animal most likely to give you trouble is a moose. By the way, I answered your pm a couple days ago, hope it helps.

yes it did help out and i know that it is rare to have to kill a bear or rogue animal if i did'nt have kids and a wife i would not be so protective i would just carry peper spray and a large hang gun. I hope i never have to shoot one i love animals and i love to eay them also thats weird love them and eat them lol but anyway i will just have to get some good advice from the locals on how to handle bear encounters the things to do and not to do cause the last thing i want to do is kill one or have my kids see me kill one. I really dont think that i will ever have to shoot one might have to use the spray or horn but if i do have to use the gun it will be a sad day as i love bears and the wild

Being a firearms owner most of my life without a single incident of an accidential discharge with 14 years military experience that required training in the proficient use of firearms as well as having three concealed carry permits that required classes in the proper use of firearms, including being taught to avoid situations that would require the use of firearms and only using one as a last resort, I think I qualify as knowing damn well what I'm doing.
