Who said that you didn't?

As someone who has actually lived where grizzlies are fairly common...common sense is better protection than anything else.

As someone who actually lives where violent gangs and drug dealers are fairly common...common sense is better protection also. I know to stay out of certain parts of town and walk away from trouble and not go into it just because I know I have all that firepower under my jacket. But I do have a few .45 caliber slugs avaiable for any thug or threat that is completely unavoidable, again as a last resort.

Good for you. This wasn't about violent gangs or drug dealers. It was about grizzlies. They tend not to die so easily. An enraged one is far more dangerous than a non enraged one.

And unlike violent criminals et al, the grizzlies aren't exactly anywhere near as liable to not shy away from confrontation, and probably not as plentiful either.

Yep...all good calibers...I don't know too much about ballistics (learning) but an expert bear-hunting friend said that to take one down surely and cleanly, the grain of the bullet is MORE important than the caliber gun...grizzlies do go down from as small as a .270., but most agree that a 30.06 is minimal (that's what I black bear hunt with...I'd probably go heavier for a griz).

I'm aware that there are powerful guns out there; that wasn't my point. If the thought of grizzly attacks concern you, there is plenty that you can do to deter that (and no, that isn't the same as advising you not to carry, that's your choice or not). But a grizzly attack is such an unlikely scenario that most people I know who live in grizzly country don't always take their guns when they go out. I never bothered, myself, and I lived behind a bear trail. If anything I worried about moose.

Well--they go where they are going to go and don't make much effort to stay away from human habitation. In the winter they are along the roads a lot because it's easier for them to find something to eat there; willows mainly, so you have to be careful while driving. I never had a problem with them in the summer but in the winter they were in my yard every day. A mother with a calf can be very aggressive. I never had any luck keeping them at a distance.

Wild animal attacks of any kind are very uncommon here; just be aware but not paranoid and you'll be fine.
