Does anyone know if you can rent a vehicle for a one way trip from Edmonton to Fairbanks? I would like to fly to Canada, rent a car, drive the Alaska Highway, drop the car off in Alaska and fly home. I am willing to pick up a rental at different city and drop it off at a different location as well.

You'd have to inquire with the rental agency. I've never heard of anyone doing that. Got a passport?

You may be better off renting a vehicle in the US, crossing the border into Canada, and then driving through to Alaska. I had a really hard time renting a vehicle in one country and then dropping it off in another, even at a rental agency that had international offices. I do know that Penske, Hertz, Allied and Enterprise operate in both the US and Canada, but you'll have to call them directly to ask about a one-way or cross-border rental.

You do have your Passport, right? It is now required to enter Canada and the US.

I hope to do the same thing next summer. I live in North Carolina, so having to travel to/from Dawson Creek, BC would take up two days each way and I simply don't have enough time for that trip. While I'd love to do it, I don't have two weeks of vacation time.

I'm probably going to fly to Great Falls, MT or Seattle, WA and take either the East or West Access routes to Dawson Creek and travel the highway.

It would be ideal if I could rent a car in Edmonton since it's a lot closer to Dawson Creek, but it sounds like it would be too much trouble to deal with the border issues.

I think renting is the best option for me.

Of course, I still need to attain a passport soon!

Megansmom drove to Alaska in four days from the east coast, I don't know why people think it takes weeks to drive up. I drove up in four days in May, my most recent trip from Montana.

Yes, but I'd like to leisurely drive up there and see the sights and such. In addition, I'd like to pull of on the South Klondike Highway and explore the Inside Passage via Skakway on ferries. Also, I only probably have nine or so days to be on vacation, so I can't spend four days driving up and back as that will eat up pretty much my whole time.

Don't know about the car rental other than it is dang expensive now.

I leave by Saturday this week... looking at speding orginally 4 days Seattle area to Seward, now researching places and knowing me I will have to stop to fish or take pictures giving myself 5 days... well see how long it takes to get up there but want to rush kinda ot get up for fishing.... but still stop off side road a little....

For anyone now looking for a time period in Seattle for a passport.. you can get it the same day if you have airline or ferry tickets proof of intenary or purchase not sure if for first time passport but renewals.. driving don't count. But I did apply for my passport on the 18th of July, paid for expedite, and by tracking records and spending a little more it should be here tomarrow.. 7/28.....

Have fun everyone
