In particular, I think because it does not seem to be "common knowledge", so many unwittingly charge into it and are affected and place the blame on something likes devil's club or an unknown.

Heck ya... I didn't know about it and what it could do. Looking at it online I would leave it alone anyways. Although it doesn't seem to require close contact to mess you up.

I've noticed in some places that devils club and cow parsnip grow right next to each other. I was trying to take a short cut on a hike this summer and I had to chose between the devils club or the parsnip. I took the devils club route. Not to bad. Got a few thorns in my hand but got almost all of them out with duct tape.
