I think the wifi on the Columbia worked almost all the time last summer. Best reception was up in the internet room. The A&P grocery store is across Tongass Ave. and to the left after you get off the ferry.

I learned this the hard way, as comfortable as the area seems, do not pick the spot next to the kids play area. I got on at night, fell asleep and was awoken by the kids, it was way too early.

I'd get there as early as you can. Just remember they'll let walk-on passangers on first. They then load the vehicles according to where your getting off at.

It won't do you much good to get there much more than a hour or two before the three hours. Once you get loaded, grab some stuff and head directly to the atrium to stake out an area. Hopefully, many will be exploring the ferry, searching for a space. You can go back down to get the rest before the ferry sets sail.

At Bellingham they ask that you arrive by 3...they begin loading at 5 and they depart at 7pm, only on Fridays now. There really isn't any reason to arrive much earlier than 3.

Above the ferry terminal at the main intersection there in the Fairhaven area of Bellingham there is a "Red Apple Market" great store...you can stock up there. The food on the ferry is very too costly.

As you get to Bellingham on I-5 (2 hours from Seattle) you take the first exit, clearly marked Alaska Ferry, to get to the ferry terminal....if you need anything other than groceries, take the next exit, there is a mall with an REI and a Haggens Grocery...the next exit following that one there is a Fred Meyers...another mall.

I believe the "car deck call" are every 4 hours and they are about 15 minutes.

Anyone have a link for this ferry? I've never heard of it (duh!) and I didn't see a name listed anywhere.

I thought it was more like 3-4 times per day. Also, it is only happens between Bellingham and Ketchikan. Beyond Ketchikan, you are allowed on the car deck at each port stop.
