Homer, PWS, or Matanuska as a day trip
I am almost done planning my trip to Alaska (Anchorage - this Thursday until Monday morning).
I will be visiting many places and doing some numerous activities of which: Denali flight-seeing, Kenai Fjords boat tour, Exit Glacier, drive to Portage Glacier, AWCC, and obviously hanging out at Anchorage. I will be renting a car. I still have Sunday fully open so should I:
1) Take a long day trip to Homer
2) Take a Prince William Sound boat tour, not sure if I should do this since I would have already done a Kenai boat tour and a visit to Portage Glacier
3) Drive north of Anchorage through Palmer to Matanuska Glacier
Thanks!

You may want to consider going to Matanuska Glacier. It's a nice 2 hour drive north, as you noted through Palmer. It's one of the more accessible glaciers that you can walk on. My wife and I were there a couple weeks ago and took this photo about 1/2 mile, as the crow flys, from the parking lot. 1.5 mile hike.

I agree with Chilkoot. You've done some great things so far, heading up here would top it off. And, while you're in this area, take the time to visit Hatcher Pass. Go see the Matanuska Glacier, which is a wonderful drive in itself, on your way back head up Palmer Fishhook to Hatcher Pass. Go all the way to Willow, back down through Wasilla, not that there is anything to see in Wasilla, but it's on the way, then back to Anchorage. It would be a long day, but well worth it.

I'd opt for either #2 or #3, because driving to Homer in one day is just too much...Homer is quite a long ways from Anchorage...like maybe almost 5 hrs. By the time you got there it would be time to start back. Whenever we drive to Homer (from Seward) we always plan on an over-night stay.

Thanks. It's actually a very easy hike to the point where I took the photo. We did have those street cleats for walking on icey sidewalks. Just wish I had a better camera now. Enjoy your trip!
