Default Possibly Moving to Juneau

Hi Juneau!

We are seriously considering moving to your city from sunny Tucson, Arizona! We have never been to Juneau or Alaska for that matter, and was hoping for some feedback on your city.

My husband is from back East and I grew up in Montana. It is too hot in Tucson. We both love sunshine and were wondering how much sunshine you see? Looking at photos of Juneau they are mostly sunny but then I saw this:

Climate in Juneau, Alaska

The amount of sun you see depends on the year. This year was one of the best years we've had for dry days. The two years before were some of the worst. I'm guessing if you moved up two years ago, you wouldn't be here after the second year. If you moved up this year, you'll last for at least 5 years if not more. What will next year hold? It's any body's guess.

For the most part, while we do get an occasional heavy rain, most times it's light and can dry off a couple of hours after it stops. It can be overcast for long periods, but usually we see the sun poke through some of the days.

We can have snow from October through April, with the most occurring December through March. We occasionally get below zero, but the usual lows are in the teens and twenties. We usually get a week or two of near zero temps, when we have clear day and nights for about a week. We used to get snow and then it would rain off. Lately, it seems to accumulate through the winter.

You won't get as much sun as Arizona, but there will be some depending on the year.

We just made the opposite move, from the Kenai Peninsula to Casa Grande for hubby to work. I have not seen this much sun in years and has only been about a month and a half since we got to AZ. Now on the peninsula in the last couple of years, this past spring was the best with weather, we had some days 70 or above and sunny Summer was peaks of sun, but cloudy, rainy for the most part until at least August 1, but temps in 50s now... Winter got some sun and was great, but it was winter...we are from MN, so cold not an issue and it was actually nicer in AK than MN for the most part... You will not have the amenities you are accustomed to in Tucson, in AK..not sure if that is an issue or not, then you will be buying rain and weather gear accordingly also, as well as finding someplace affordable to rent, live...

Do you miss AK? I know there will be things I will miss about AZ and its looking the sunshine is gonna be at the top of the list. So the reports are true...it does rain a lot in Juneau. My husband loves to hunt so I imagine he will be doing a lot of that in the rain.

We are keeping our house and boat on the peninsula, and when we retire in a few years will be back for summers for sure unless hubby returns back up there for work in the future. I have lived in cold climates all my life, and am ready for a break for a while. Also remember that you pay nonresident hunting, fishing fees until you are there for a year. I will miss our fresh fish for sure, but we did bring the freezer full with! I miss the moose going through the yard whenever they felt like it...but on the flip side...I just got some tomatoes, peppers, herbs and flowers in the ground in September no less!

The scenery and outdoor activities. There's fishing, hiking, camping, boating, hunting, etc., during the non-winter months. Skiing, snow machining, snowshoeing, etc., during winter.

While it does rain in Juneau, you learn to not let it stop what you're doing. Sure, you might stay in during a downpour, but most of the time it doesn't rain that hard or constant.

Is that drizzle or snizzle? Seriously, kind of misty if a very light rain, drizzle during warm weather, snizzle if mix of rain and sleet

In AZ the rain doesn't last long. It can rain for 30 minutes and then its all sunny again. It also rains in spurts. What I mean by that is, it may be raining on my street but 1 mile away its not raining and in some cases it won't rain at all a mile away.

How is the rain in Juneau? Is it mostly "drizzle" and "snizzle"? Does it generally rain all over city or in spurts?
