Thanks for the predator warnings (and the contact information)! We are planning to build a very strong cage with 1/2" hardware cloth and weld wire on the top and bottom also. We have a huge Rubbermaid playpen that we use to keep them inside when the weather is cold. Very spoiled ducks! They are a domestic mallard mix and can fly, but not very far. They lay an egg a day, which is a good perk from a pet! We have fox, bobcats, mountain lions here in far Northern Cal but the predators in Alaska are sure way beyond anything we have dealt with before. We are moving because we want to be in a wilder place so that is a good thing! - Michele

DEC - Environmental Health - State Veterinarian Home Page

The above site will give you some information; the State Vet is in charge of animals, livestock, etc. entering into Alaska. Their phone number is in the left upper hand side. I'd give them a call and ask questions.

For the record, after making many phone calls this is what I found...To bring the ducks into Canada I will need to submit an Application for Permit to Import with $35, and they will send me a permit and further instructions. It sounds like it is actually harder to get them into Alaska, and I will need a health certificate from a vet within 30 days of entry and they must be checked for Pullorum and Typhoid Disease. The vet will call and get a permit number at the time of the exam. I think I now have all my ducks in a row... - Michele

FYI, be aware that half the time they won't ask to see the documents, but don't take that as an excuse not to get them.

Yeah nobody wanted to see all of the vet documents I paid for to fly my cat up here. After all the trouble and expense I wanted them to be looked at. But they probably would look at papers for a duck since that is so unusual.

We have three cats too! This will be an interesting (and expensive) move...If we don't get the paperwork, they will want to see it. If we do, they won't...I am so excited about moving to Alaska that I will jump through any number of hoops to make it happen. - M
