At least you didn't have a connection on American. Then you get to pay AND get yelled at by grumpy flight attendants.

ONCE???????, dang I stayed in trouble, in seven different states, something one school psychologist said was an "oppositional defiance" thingy. In fifth grade I got a whippin' in school for something, I did not do. Because I got the whippin' at school, I got one when I got home. I figured I had nothing to lose, so...... I got two whippin's a day for the next six months. If nothing else, all concerned admitted that I was creative with my mischief makin'. I believe I lost a portion of my defiant attitude somewhere early in my vacation on Parris Island, S.C.

Alaska Airlines is just doing what other American airlines are doing - charging for checked-in baggage.

It seems trivial to be whining about these small charges. I fly all over Northern Alaska in my job, usually with about 200 pounds of equipment. I have to use small carriers such as Frontier. Airfare and excess baggage one way from Fairbanks to Point Hope, about 2 hours on two flights is about $1500. The actual charge for the baggage, over 80 pounds is over $5 per pound.

Yes, and we need to keep things in perspective. For all of the complaining, Alaska Air still allows us to check up to 3 bags for free when flying intra-state. And they don't charge Active Duty Military.

If I may defend Alaska Airlines here:
We all know that fuel prices are going up through the roof, and Jet-A is no different. Alaska Airlines has always striven to give people the best prices, and the best service to back up those prices (yeah every once in a while you can play musical chairs with Southwest in the lower48 for a few bucks less... but do you WANT to?). Alaska Air has pretty much kept their prices the same, maybe a few bucks higher for flights, even with the rising gas (and everything else) costs. That bag, however, is using up more fuel. On a longer flight (like ANC - SEA) that bag probably costs Alaska MORE than 15 in additional fuel, and AK COULD just add 7 dollars to EVERYONES ticket if they have bags or not, but is that really fair to those people who are not checking bags? I really don't think the word "Thieves" is really an appropriate term... and sends the wrong message about an airline who has a history of doing great things for the community, and always going above and beyond for Alaskan citizens.
It is cheaper to fly in Europe because everything is subsidized by the government over there.

But still not cheap. Also Alaska Airlines has this economy to ride out... Trust me, AS is not out to rob anyone... they are keeping their prices as low as possible.. Lets start looking at how their competition charges
