hey i'm hearing horrer stories about the bugs (work, house)

i'm lookin to do some flyfishing on the stuyahok river in july 20th-26th floating through lake clark and hearing some intimidating things bout bugs have nay of you been through there this time frame whats the reality of it

Come summer there will be mosquitos pretty much everywhere. Bring repellant and maybe headnet. But yes they wil be there.

The mosquitos tend to be an all-or-nothing kind of thing. When you've got em, you've got ALL of em. Our place was on a hillside and we almost never had a problem with mosquitos. Lots and lots of yellowjackets, but hardly any mosquitos. A few miles down the road we'd go to a BBQ at someone elses house and get eaten alive. Some places that I went for work had bugs so thick that they'd actually form a crust on the leading edge of the rotor blades just from landing there. You'd take off your helmet afterwards and see a ring of crushed bugs where the headset earcups touched.

Its no coincidence that Alaska state law actually requires one bug headnet per passenger in the survival kit for all Part 135 operators. If you need one, you'll be very glad you have it. They're lightweight and hardly take up any space, so why not?

If I can give you one tip of advice: do not kill a mosquito! If you do, the rest will come storming over for the funeral!

rance - of course you will make sure they are gone by Aug 30th right

They should be about gone...but will be heavily replaced by the white socks! Which are far worse I think.

Look folks, the mosquito issue here is really overrated. Now granted, the university up in fairbanks did get one with a wingspan of 4.9859437 inches, no harm was done since everyone here carries a shotgun, and lead shot is still legal.
But the guy from new mexico duct-taped up used as bait had a few issues with it, no real harm tho.
BTW, having a headnet handy is good advice.......

I don't mind the little bits of blood they take, but that little whiny wing is REALLY annoying. Of course, then, there's the massive quantities of calamine to reduce the itch after a day without deet.

we have palmetto(fancy name for roaches) that fly.

White socks are those worn with sneakers/sandals and shorts. The whiny wing is that sound the skeeter makes in your ear as it's about to take its share. It is almost as annoying as the itch, and you don't see them (unless you've got phenomenal peripheral vision, so you just wave it off. Scares the fish when you move that fast.
