Since I don't even know where the heck Matanuska Glacier is, I'm guessing no, Barkingowl.

Point McKenzie prison? I don't know much about it, just that it's under construction. I think that's the one starlite9 mentioned. From what I recall it's being built on the Glenn Highway which goes up towards the Mat. glacier.

Where is that? I'm always on the look out for new food places!
Can't help you with the housing stuff though.
Oh, and welcome BTW!

If you are willing to pretty much move to anywhere, I would highly recommend Seward or anywhere on the Kenai Peninsula for that matter. Great fishing, camping, snow machining, four wheelin, bon fires, etc. Its definitely Alaska living at its best. I would begin networking at the prison in Seward so if an opening comes up you can get it.

Barking is talking about the Palmer Correction Center which is on 58 mile road..which comes off the Glenn highway at....you guessed it...Mile 58. That's about 8 miles past Palmer toward Sutton.
Palmer Correctional Center is probably one of the places you applied.

If that's where he was talking about, then yes. I have applied at Palmer CC.

Thank you! It's this place called Chicago's Best, it's in Elmendorf AFB right in between the commissary and the PX. One of the owners is from Chicago and they've got the real thing. Chicago style hot dogs, some gyros, and the BEST Italian beef sandwiches I have ever tried! Very few people outside of northern Illinois even knows what an Italian beef sandwich is, so it surprised the heck out of me to discover one of the best was way up in Alaska! And this coming from a guy who has tried a bunch of different sandwiches from different places in the Chicago area.
If you don't have access to the base I suggest you ask a friend with base access to get one for you. If you don't have a friend with base access, make one. They are THAT good!

The wife and I took a trip down to Kenai and Soldotna about two months back and I just fell in love with the place. I haven't had a chance to go to Seward yet, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. I'm hoping to one day get the chance to live down there in the Peninsula. I'm only 25 years young so I can definitely make it happen.

Hi Rigo! Glad to hear you're settling in. I do the drive from the valley to anchorage 3x a week......I don't mind it, but there are others who would never do it. Though, I personally would never do the drive to Girdwood. I've worked with a few young gals that tried it, thought the "ski bum" feel of Girdwood was cool....but most of them moved back to Anchorage after a few months. It's only 2 lanes and it literally hugs the moutain curves along the inlet with no berms on either side to dodge bad drivers or road hazards.
Just my 2 cents. Dawn

Hello Dawn! Thank you. Yes, I'm starting to think Girdwood may not be a viable option. Living in the valley sounds very appealing to me, just not driving to and from Anchorage every day. Although, if I land a job with DOC, it would only be every other week. And come to think of it, of the few friends I've made so far, they mostly live in the valley as well.
BTW, I love the pics of your Malamute! I have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier myself, but I thought about getting either a Siberian Husky or a Malamute in a few years. Though I'll probably get a Husky. Malamutes are too big for me!
