What I dont understand is why the damp laws ever prevented anyone from drinking an insane amount to begin with? Its like 5 cases of beer, 14 fifths (750mL), and something like 20 bottles of wine (I hate wine so I never ordered it). Just the liquor and beer is enough for almost any alcoholic as I managed to finish my entire order just once. Its a HUGE amount of alcohol and there was no way anyone was drinking their entire order on a routine basis. To my knowledge anyone with a driver's license (or state issued ID card) could just head over to ace air, get it copied, and start maxing their order out each month. I dont understand why bootlegging within Bethel was even existant at all when people could just go max out their order each month. The only thing I see changing with this is availability. Instead of waiting two or three days for your booze you can just head over to the liquor store and purchase it immediately. And for the people dumb enough to buy it off bootleggers (not counting children since they had no choice), I suppose they get it much cheaper now.
Here's where it gets interesting because to my knowledge the only other place out in western Alaska to get booze is Dillingham. I know Bethel is a community where lots of people fly in and out daily to and from several dozen villages. So I imagine they could just fly in, stock up, and fly out. Like I said in another post, this will just increase bootlegging to other villages (Paka, Wana, Kweethluk, etc..) by a stupid amount. I already know that a lot of the villages are becoming too expensive to live in and and people are leaving for larger, more affordable cities like Anchorage. The air traffic has slown down a HUGE amount in the past couple of years since I left. We used to routinely work about fifty to sixty planes an hour and now its more like twenty five to thirty. The only time I see Bethel get busy anymore is freezeup/breakup of the Delta. I have a feeling this will just speed up the departure from a lot of villages and kind of be like a nail in the coffin type of deal. Kind of sad actually.

I'm 30..... lol.... but I will not smack your butt or try to ripe off your clothes at the local bar.. unless you ask me to...
so I am not as intelligent as all of you on here and I don't know or even pretend to know what effects alcohol has on someone due to their ethnic background... BUT... from just personal experience(maybe ignorance)... Alcohol is not some thing you need, it is a luxury not a necessity.. I go around with my customers about this on a nightly basis (I work at a liquor store pt at night and weekends, have for 9 yrs) If you can not afford your habit then you shouldn't have it.. BUT I think everyone should have the right to decide for themselves if that want to drink or not. I realize there are a lot of dumb-asses out there that can't control themselves, and that is unfortunate for them and their loved ones but they should still have the choice if they want to ruin their lives than well it is theirs to ruin.. I drink not daily but almost; that does not make me an alcoholic(I should know, I grew up with them and still see them every night at work as well) and I should not be treated like a second class citizen (like I already do for being a smoker). These people that can't handle there habits should not have the right to ruin it for the rest of us that are a responsible individuals who enjoy a nice whiskey and coke at the end of the day, hell I hold down 1 ft and 2 pt jobs so I feel I deserve that if I want it.
Lastly.. feel me in... are STD's really that big of a deal up there? wow.. who would of thought.. I wonder why that is?

Nome is also a wet community in western AK. I know of some damp towns, but I don't know of any other wet ones. Maybe Kotzebue?
There is definitely importation from Nome to dry villages around here. One such attempt very recently was foiled by a broken prop (on the boat being used for it) that prompted a swift jettisoning of the majority of the load. A buddy of mine in a nearby village said that the whole town was beachcombing for several days...several days which were followed by several scary nights. Lots of violence.

yes, palmer has anything you want.
in rural areas, villages vote on whether to be wet, damp, or dry. the vast majority vote dry.
