With a December 1st start-date at work, it's a far better use of my time and money to ship my books, DVD/CDs, and photo albums via USPS Media Mail (a 70lb carton costs all of $30), and my stash of green coffee beans (200lbs) via USPS flat-rate Priority Mail (a 70lb box costs all of $14). My buddy's wife works at the Post Office, and she tells me I can send all the stuff c/o General Delivery, and the Post Office will hold it for me, without charge, for up to 30 days! It's what makes America great

The remaining personal effects will go via UPS. As for furniture, etc., it's all five years old, and I'm giving it away... I can buy a new bed, and other previously-owned furniture, when I arrive.

If I fly in another 10 days, I'll have three weeks to find an apartment, get acclimated, and enjoy Thanksgiving... and begin work feeling fresh 'n happy.

Chow Main!
Probably a pretty good decision! My husband always contended that we should have just gotten rid of a lot of our stuff & replaced, considering the price of hauling it all up here from New Mexico to Alaska 12 years ago!

Check out Craig's list for replacement items.

You must be getting excited about the big move.

I live in a beautiful place, but it isn't friendly.
I'm an RN and am looking to move back in a year. My biggest concern is how much will it cost me to move? I have 2 dogs and a Harley, everything else can be sold. But to be realistic, what can I expect in costs to move a family of 2 with dogs and 2 hogs and camper along with some household items?
Or in other words, how much did it cost you to move to Anchorage?
All over the State, the Hosp's are crawling over each other to get RN's here. They will pay for your moving expenses and a signing bonus. Figure out where you want to go and call the one closest to there and talk to the Human Resource person.
