Default Every question Anyone Might ask about Moving to Alaska

I guess thousands have thought about moving to Alaska and many have the same questions. Sometimes I sense those who live here get tired of answering the same questions in hundreds of threads.

To solve answering the same question over and over again.. how about if all questions anyone who is thinking of asking gets posted in this thread and it is made sticky?

That way, people who are moving here, or want to move here can scan this thread and find out mostly all answers... and those who live here, and want to can come here and answer questions.
Just a thought.

Does that make it "slippy" as opposed to "sticky"?

Warpt's thread should still be a sticky. This board was great when that thread was a sticky. Now we've got all manner of old threads being bumped back up by people looking for the same information that was in Warpt's thread. Besides, I think that's the one I put the penguin story in.

Default Some great links for anyone thinking of coming to Alaska

You may want to look at Jobs in Craig's List
craigslist: anchorage / mat-su classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events
Everyone in Alaska uses Craig's List
You can look here for Jobs, Real Estate, Furniture... you can find out what you can rent to live in and how much it will cost you.

If you want to know about Crime in Alaska you can look at the below link:

Here is a link to a crime map in Anchorage:
http://www.muni.org/Departments/poli...ensityMap.aspx

Crime Statistics for Alaska - Criminal Watch.com
Alaska Crime Rates 1960 - 2008

Rental of a decent apartment varies in many places. I would expect to pay at least $1200.00 a month for a 2 bedroom of about 800 square feet.
Then you will have an electric bill, and then you will need internet...
Internet can cost you as much as 170.00 a month including the telephone service you need if you are outside of the Cable range.. you will have to get DSL. Mind you, you will be able to get a good download speed, but you will not be able to get above 1 megabyte upload speed for any amount of money.

If you rent or buy a house, and this is general terms, you may pay as much as 400.00 a month for heating bills. It could be more, ... and this is talking about in some sort of city, or suburb area.

The things which will suck you dry of money in Alaska are these:
Housing
Heating
Gasoline
Food

All of the above are huge, huge expenses.

I have not lived in California, or New York City... I hear it is very expensive there as well... so, I have no way of comparing those.

The farther away from Anchorage you get, the more things cost.
I have not been way up into the northern or eastern areas so I do not know pricing for things.
I have heard of places out in the bush, that things like a loaf of bread is 10.00.

A decent loaf of bread is around 3.00
A Gallon of milk runs on average 4.00

Gasoline is running around 3.50 a gallon right now.
Today is October 11, 2009

I will be posting more useful information here in this thread

Anyone who wishes to post useful information in this thread for those who may want to know... welcome to this thread.

I hope this thread will help all those who have questions.

We all can make this thread a great place to inform visitors of useful information they need.
