Rental of a decent apartment varies in many places. I would expect to pay at least $1200.00 a month for a 2 bedroom of about 800 square feet.
Then you will have an electric bill, and then you will need internet...
Internet can cost you as much as 170.00 a month including the telephone service you need if you are outside of the Cable range.. you will have to get DSL. Mind you, you will be able to get a good download speed, but you will not be able to get above 1 megabyte upload speed for any amount of money.
If you rent or buy a house, and this is general terms, you may pay as much as 400.00 a month for heating bills. It could be more, ... and this is talking about in some sort of city, or suburb area.
The things which will suck you dry of money in Alaska are these:
Housing
Heating
Gasoline
Food
All of the above are huge, huge expenses.
I have not lived in California, or New York City... I hear it is very expensive there as well... so, I have no way of comparing those.
The farther away from Anchorage you get, the more things cost.
I have not been way up into the northern or eastern areas so I do not know pricing for things.
I have heard of places out in the bush, that things like a loaf of bread is 10.00.
A decent loaf of bread is around 3.00
A Gallon of milk runs on average 4.00
Gasoline is running around 3.50 a gallon right now.
