The seeds of Papaver somniferum are commonly used in food in the United State; no need to go traipsing about Afghanistan.

Some poppy seed sold as spices are the seeds of Papaver somniferum; they have been known to germinate quite nicely.
Before drug testing became more sophisticated, people who ate muffins with poppyseeds in them would test positive for opiates.

ahhhh...yes and the porch light came on....gosh I do have a memory!!! I had completely forgotten this until you posted it!! thanks...I know of one spice import spice company here is MA the "supposedly" still imports the real deal uncooked....at least that's what they said a few years back!!!

Yeah, Myth Busters did a bit on eating Poppy seed rolls to see if you would flunk a drug test... They had to eat about a couple of dozen rolls at one sitting, but they did pop the bubble and it showed traces of Opiates in their system....
