Really curious to see how the reports in this thread are going to change heading into the warmer months. Obviously that's still a while off, especially for Alaska, but the thought just came to me.

Moose you want snow you need to come to my yard in NJ. Day after Christmas got hit with 26" and it hasn't really stopped. Each week we seem to be getting at least a foot, with very little melt off. Last week piled on another 17" and there is another storm on the horizon for next week.
LOL I've run out of places to pile the snow. Not to mention I wrecked my back digging a trail for the poor dog who was hopping all over the drifts and sinking.
So come down to NJ we've got your snow!!
Bonnie how's your last winter in Ma. holding up?

Default Weather Report - Humidity

I thought it was rather interesting when I saw todays weather report of three different villages in the Northern Arctic

SCROLL DOWN on the left side.

ZERO HUMIDITY ?? !! a total falsehood; some have laid claim to. Here is the proof - The Arctic can be very dry (at times).

When I type something; it is only because I have personally experienced it or can provide the proof of my senseless imagined claims.

Hilarious!

Let me repeat, for the clueless: There is no such thing as a coastal location with 0 percent relative humidity on the Arctic Ocean. It hain't neveh gonna happen!

If the AWOS at Point Hope is flaky and does not report RH (or Dew Point), the fact that some web site's software can't handle a lack of data gracefully does not mean the RH at Point Hope is 0%!

The 4 AM weather reported by the PAPO AWOS contained no data for Relative Humidity or Dew Point. (But had +3F temperature and 18 MPH winds, so that is the one being cited.) The AWOS didn't report data for anything at 2 AM or at Midnight, or yesterday at 11 AM or at Noon. It is clearly having sensor problems...

Now the funny part. It started reporting bogus RH humidity at about 3 AM this morning. Figures for Dew Point that are way down in the -10F to -20F range, with RH reported from 35% to 65%. Why? Well, one can speculate... because what it had been reporting for the past few days ranged from 90 to 100% RH, and the wind is blowing pretty good, that the sensor is iced over (due to such high humidity!) and that's why it is flaky or non-functional! (It is speculation that the immediate cause is as stated, but it is not at all speculative that this is a not uncommon occurrence experience by AWOS sensors. It also happens here in Barrow and at others.)

Here is the NOAA web page that provides the actual data. It has a 24 hour hourly history too.

http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/PAPO.html

The key to this exercise is noticing that for several hours the temperature an the Dew Point were the same (100% Relative Humidity), and then all of a sudden it began reporting wildly lower Dew Point values.

(Just for grins and giggles, let me point out that I've been in the AWOS teepee at Point Hope many times. I wasn't there to fool with the weather instruments though, so I'm not really familiar with them at all. They have a modem and a voice line that can be called directly for reports, over circuits provided by Alascom.)
