Apparently the ferry from Cordova was cancelled yesterday due to high seas, and a friend who just got back to town said there were several people at the airport here who'd been trying to get to Anchorage for two days but the flights haven't run. Supposed to be halfway nice today though. I've got to bottle some beer and then I'm going skiing!

Well, we got hail last night. Not snow...hail. So I guess it must have been a thunderstorm. Didn't hear any thunder or see any lightning.

It's all over the ground this morning. Little white balls of hail.

Sounds more like Ice Pellets.

Ice pellets are caused when you have a layer of warm air with below freezing air above and below it down to the ground. When a snowflake passes through the warm air, it starts to melt. As this flake continues to fall back into the sub-freezing layer closer to the surface, it will re-freeze into an ice pellet. If there isn't enough time for the snow flake/rain drop to re-freeze before it hits the ground, you will get freezing rain.

Yeah, sounds like sleet (AKA ice pellets) if it's hard and icy, or graupel if it's more like balls of snow. Hail is typically a spring/summer phenomenon that requires cumulonimbus clouds, or thunderheads. I had a dream last night that it was hailing inside a building. Weird.

I'm thinking of fitting my car with ice skates, roads are slick but the parking lots are worse. Due to the last couple of warm days the snow melted into very large puddles which at 31F are now large expanses of ice.

edit: hmm should this be in the winterizing my car thread ?
