Default Wrangell so sad today

We lost one of our favorites yesterday. Two fishermen, best friends since toddlers were hunting from their fishing boat the last couple days in Canoe Pass. After a day's hunt yesterday they both were on the bow setting the anchor when Allen lost his balance and fell overboard.
Too far to reach him, Daves quickly found the harness and was able to slip it over Allen. With hypothermia and confusion setting in, as Dave pulled, Allen raised his arms and slid from the harness -twice. By the time Dave got him aboard on the third try he was unconscious. Dave wrapped him and worked CPR on his best friend for an hour and half 'til the coast guard arrived. Allen was gone.
Allen was only 56 and touched nearly every household in Wrangell. Father, grandpa, uncle, brother, son and newly married not more than a year, still on their honeymoon and so full of love and joy. Married to a wonderful friend who lost her first husband several years ago when her boys were young, drowning in a boating accident in winter.
It's too easy to die up here. Be safe everyone!

Oh man, what a sad thing. Hugs to you GrammasCabin. What a loss. Way too young. I hope the pain of loss lessens for his family and friends as quickly as possible.

Thank you for the kindness everyone. Allen wasn't a close friend but he was someone I sure liked a lot. My heart so hurts for my wonderful friends who are so sad tonight.

I was going to post how incredibly beautiful it's been here the past several days. I guess there's the beauty, and there's the beast.

There are pods of humpbacks from the north end of the island in front of town clear out past me at 15 mile. Blowing, swirling, diving and back up again. The whales are followed by clouds of seabirds diving and screeching. On the outskirts off all this are dozens and dozens of Stellar sea lions.
I went to visit my buddy this afternoon. There were four humpbacks and at least a dozen sealions in the little deep bay in front of her cabin bellowing, blowing, thrashing and hollering. She tells me that's been going on for days. Waking her up at night.
Ever know anybody kept awake at night by whales and sealions partying outside your window?

Wow Jenatte good for your friends! Wow still freaking out and waiting for your email -- City data has it all good Grammas Cabin is one of my friend Mom from school that I haven't seen in 20 years!!! Wow wow wow! Look forward to emailing you hun and talking to Lisa! Very excited! Thanks for the pics. Small world!

Yes I have heard a humpback in Hawaii last year. Although it wasn't a blow it was against the cliffs where I stay at in Hawaii unheard of sound to me. It was like an elk bugle combined with blow so loud heard in the living room across the road to cliffs. Heard him for at leat 3 hours and 30 miles up the coast. Guess only the males make this noise only at night. Not near the water in Alaska. Stellars sea lions are incredible loud. Have more pics in OR than Alaska amazing.
