be prepared to be the most hated person in town...

VPSO can be a rough job. you'll probably be alright if you don't just show up in town and start arresting people for things that might be technically illegal but still the norm- i'm not sure what they'll tell you in training, but you'll be much more popular and appreciated if you remember to keep public safety as your top priority. keeping people from dying or getting hurt is the most important thing you can do.

and i agree about mcgrath, even though i've been to neither and have only hearsay to go on.

I hesitated to respond to this but decided to anyway. I've been to both Ruby and Mcgrath and I like both towns. They are very different towns in culture.

Ruby started it's life as a gold rush town but is now pretty much a typical Yukon River village. The population is 80% Koyukon Indian. There are about 200 people in the whole town. If I were a new VPSO in Ruby I would spend most of my time getting the backing of the people in town before I did much VPSOing. I would visit every home in town as a person who is trying to understand the culture and be an asset to the town. You really need to know the people and have their backing to be successful.

Same thing in Mcgrath, but that is a very different town. It is a hub town and has jet service to Anchorage. It's 2x the size of Ruby and it's populaton is about 1/2 Native Alaskan and 1/2 White. I would do the same thing there, but would be very careful to not show favoritism toward either 1/2 of the population.

Remember, in both of these towns, everyone knows everyone. You are the odd one out. You need to get to know absolutely everyone in town.

If you have the right attitude and have the backing of the town it could be a great job. If you start out with the wrong attitude you just won't last long. Back-up is a long ways away so you need to approach every situation with the right attitude.

There is no jet service to McGrath. Pen Air uses their SAAB 340's propjets. Frontier Alaska uses Beechcraft 1900Cs on their runs along with the Dash 8s.

Aniak doesn't have jet service anymore since the Markair days. Frontier Alaska and Pen Air service flights to Anchorage.

Thank you all for your responses! I have been checking back here every now and then. My background check is in the last phase right now and I should have a clearance by the end of next week. My BG has passed through 3 phases already, last is the phone interview with the AST sergeant and him calling my references. TCC hopes to get me into the academy on January 3rd. If everything clears I will be flying out Monday the 28th.
