If I were going to be doing a lot of milling full-time, then I do think the BSM would win out in the end. But for personal, intermittent, homestead use like throwing up a cabin or a shed, I think the CSM is adequate... and then you can switch chains and go get your firewood Fuel consumption is an issue, but we are close enough to the road system that stocking up and hauling some in isn't as critical.

I've been thinking about mills, generators, fuel tanks, etc., and considering the expenses, I'm wondering if I just won't go the Dick Proenneke route. No power tools, and just an old log home. The only thing I won't "build" is the wood stove. It'll take me 5 times as long, but what the hell.

Well if you build a full scribe log cabin, if done properly, are a thing of beauty!

It's useful to go to YouTube - Broadcast Yourself., and do a search for "chainsaw mill", and "bandsaw mill". You know the old saying: "a picture is worth a thousand words"? Well, a video clip is worth even more. Watching the mill setup procedure, the actual sawing, etc. via a video clip....you will learn quite a lot.

The bandsaw mill I had would turn out quite a lot more lumber at the end of the day than the chainsaw mill I also had. (like about 3 times as much) There is a lot of "dinking around" with a cordless driver-drill and boards for initial setup, just to get a log prepped for cutting with a CSM. You'll see all that on the video clips.

The swing-blade mills are even faster than the bandsaw mills (logs don't need to be rotated), but the lumber doesn't come out as smooth, and there is more sawdust due to the wider kerf. The swingblades cost quite a bit more (about twice as much). Even with those drawbacks, I sure would like to own one...

NomadicBear - we're going in the middle. Using power tools to get the logs and mill them down, but all the timber framing and joinery will be with hand tools. I'm sure at the end of it, I'm really going to wish that I'd bought a planer/joiner and a molding mill, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to have enjoyed doing the work by hand

LOL, kind of entertaining they don't even list Stihl.

Then again, those are silly clickbait reviews, so there's that also.
