Question What do YOU like about living in Alaska?

Just curious why some people end up living in Alaska for so long...aside from it being "home" (place where your family and friends are), why do YOU like Alaska?

Opening your front door in the winter and quickly closing it because there is a moose about 8 feet away. Just one of the many things

Let's see....a lot of the things I like or liked are fading into the past now but I suppose that happens everywhere. I miss not having a paved road in sight. But anyway, the OP asked about things we like so...the long twilights in SE during the summer, fifty below in the interior, alpenglow, and the boreal forests, and the sense of community that exists in the more remote locations.

Agreed with everything on the list. I also enjoy how the people up here are abit more independent than most people I have met down south.

After thinking about it a bit more, I think the thing I like the most is that no matter what town/village I go to, I know someone. Doesn't matter if I am in Southeast, the Aleutians, Interior or anywhere else in Alaska. That is what I like the most, I have friends all over. For a place that it over twice the size of Texas, and with only about 600,000 people, that ain't bad.

Even if I don't know who lives in the town, if I start talking with the locals, there is always a common name that comes up there. That is something that an outsider just can't grasp...

Metlakatla: Feel free to talk about your dislikes as well...! I'd love to hear it all.

The northern lights are beautiful and yet so strange...sometimes feels like you're getting abducted by aliens!
