You do not need a passport to drive into/out of Canada yet, that begins in Jan 08. You will need one if you fly in/out though.

Ah, you're the person I'd like to ask...I'm considering driving from Oklahoma to Talkeetna. Now I've driven some mountain passes in Colorado and hope to NEVER do that again! They were drastic! Are there scarey mountain passes through Canada? Also, ANY information would be helpful. I may be pulling a small trailer. Thanks!

Driven area between Haines and Anchorage but don't know about the other lengths.
We just got back home to Alaska last night. We drove down to the lower 48 to visit relatives. We found most Super8 Motels are pet friendly. They charge a fee from anywhere to $5, 10 extra for pets. Also, Comfort Inn in lower 48 had some that were pet friendly.

It's a long drive if you are doing it alone. We bought the Milepost but actually found the Atlas Map Book ($5 at Walmart) very helpful.

When we came through the U.S. Border yesterday they asked if our dogs were current (rabies shots), they then asked for the verification paperwork which we had ready from the vet. Good luck.

Yes there are some gnarly spots. Really the Alcan is not bad. But if your making the drive before winter you'll be fine. Heck even in winter it's not bad. Just drive according to conditions!

Could you define "gnarly" please? I'm really apprehensive about those darn mountain passes! I'm not wondering about taking the ferry from Victoria area on up. I'm haven't found rates yet. Looks like it goes up to Haines area. Would that bypass the passes?

Get a copy of the Milepost. It gives you a mile by mile accounting of the driving conditions. No Alaska ferries run out of Victoria. Bellingham, Washington is the southernmost terminal for the Alaska ferry.

Yu will have no problem driving the Alcan. I think the Cassiar Highway has worse pass conditions. Warpt?

The Cassiar Highway is a up and down BIG mountain roads. The Alcan is a safe roadway year round, in the summer there is always going to be construction zones. Some of the "gnarley" areas aren't that bad, you just have to follow the posted limits and you'll be fine. I'm even scared of heights and I've had no problem with any of the mountains.

Here are some of the passes in the British Columbia Rockies.
