Default Homer

I think most people would like Homer. It is gorgeous and fun.

I spent some time in Kenai (my aunt lives in Soldotna), which I always liked a lot.

The people in either area are really great. Very real, friendly, and quirky.

And the weather would be a big improvement from Fairbanks (where I lived as a kid)...

I will bet you there are more Californians in Kenai in the summer than in California.

We have been over-run with tourists the last few years.

Everyone wants to build or buy a cabin and fish the river!

My wife and are retiring in a few months. We plan to buy a camper then drive the full length of California, at 5 miles per hour! Just to see how many cars we can line up behind us.

Although your intentions are good, there's nothing to see or do beyond their National Parks. Redwood NP is unreal, massive trees and thousands of years old. Then head on over to Lassen, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia, Death Valley Parks. While your at it, Grand Canyon in Arizona, Zion, Bryce, Capital Reef and Arches National Parks in Utah. Save Colorado, Wyoming and Montana for next summer.

We live in Soldotna, we have seen some nice houses with great mountain views but they do not stay on the market long, we fell in love with a lovely cedar sided house with an awesome mountain view it was well worth the money at 310,000 but it went super fast.
You should check out www.AlaskaRealEstate.com - Statewide MLS system - Homes, Land, Commercial, Businesses.
A word to the wise Soldotna gets crazy busy here from about June to Sept. Its good for the stores but it can get alittle frustrating when all these people appear in town. My hubby is not patient and he finds it almost too much he has been talking about moving! We are not!!
Homer is very pretty though, if there was work there I am sure thats where we would go. Although he has been talking about Fairbanks, thats a
big NO WAY, not because it get so very cold but because it get so very hot in the summer. After wintering here I find 72 it too hot for me, guess you aclimatise very quickly.
Good Luck

With no job waiting just going to go. I am in my mid 30's and fell in love with Alaska after going on a cruise this June.
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on moving co's that they have had any luck with. I am moving from Nashville TN.
Also I want to move to a smaller town..... must have a mountain view. Any ideas???
I'm trying to move up from Nashville as well. Let me know how the adjustment goes!

I am originally from the midwest also, but am retirining on the Kenai. I have 5 acres south of Kenai in the Kasilof/Cohoe area. Yes it is a zoo in the summer (MAY-SEPT), and traffic is terrible then. I have been stationed in CA and all over the world the last 20 yrs, so I am used to the traffic, but I am getting out of here, finally.

The Kenai is a beautiful/awesome place. There is no other way to put it. I have been coming up here for the last seven years and go see someplace and try something new every year. I am finally getting to do it "For Good" or until my body gives out on me.

There are plenty of sports to partake of, such as fishing, mushing, skiing, ice skating, so if you like winter sports we have it. Wildlife is plentiful, also. People always tell you to p/u the Milepost- BUT, it is not always up to date. How are you getting to Alaska, driving the ALCAN, the ferry (if so, where are you getting off, Whittier or Homer). I am getting off in Whittier to save the mone, plus I love the drive through Coopers Landing (but there is a 30 MPH speed limit for several miles).

Maybe we will run into each other. There are not that many people around in the winter 3-4K in ea Soldotna/Kenai.

If you have only been on a cruise, please consider going to the library and borrowing Tapes or CDs on Alaska. A cruise only shows you the Tip of the iceberg, in many ways. Each area has its own climate, culture. Especially cming from Nashville, the East and the South. I am sure your weather is much more temperate than AK. I have been stationed at FT Knox, KY, so have spent some time in your neck of the woods.

There are not many jobs available, especially in smaller towns. Unless of course, you want hard work, then go to Homer, Valdez, etc for Commercial fishing in the summer. There is always corrections available. The Pipeline is another possibility. If you do not have a job lined up, do you know how you are going to support yourself in the coming months? Do you have adequate savings to cover you through the winter? It costs more to live in AK than it does in Nashville. It is comparable to CA. Generally, housing is cheaper, but food and fuel is not. Gas is expensive!!!!.

Things to take into consideration.

Fairbanks can be hot in summer and -54 in the winter. The land of Extremes. If you go to Sitka, Ketchican, Kenai, etc. I hope you like rain. Kenai just had 39 days straight of rain.
