Here's my advice.. Go to South Dakota- get hired on as a farmhand. This will often involve working as a slave for an elderly couple in exchange for barely any pay and reduced rent in an poorly insulated true pioneer home somewhere on the property. You will gain valuable experience and will be much less likely to freeze to death. You have to pretty much show up in the town (obviously rural areas only) to find out about these jobs but you can't show up penniless- you'll need to rent something for awhile.

Another reality check here...while Wikipedia is a lovely place to find all sorts of obscure information, are you aware that ANYONE can post ANYTHING on there with no peer review which means much of the info ranges from A) accurate but not properly documented to B) mostly true but somewhat inaccurate to C) absolutely bogus deliberate hoax.

Even wikipedia themselves caution people not to make any big decisions based on their info. You can see their disclaimer here: Wikipedia:General disclaimer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So while you are doing your research you probably want to get some CREDIBLE sources of information. Some places to begin might be

Hey.....Farm jobs, in South Dakota aren't that easy to come by, either.
And housing in rural areas, is basically non~existant, here.
To the OP. Please do not just "show up", anywhere. It costs a lot to live, anywhere, these days.
(ETA: there is a straw bale MUSEUM, about 30 miles drom where I live. to keep my post on topic.....)

I kinda feel bad for the OP, I think they are biting off way more then they can chew with their dream & it's gotta hurt to face that reality. At the same time I find their attitude shocking... we can't earn the money to buy our own land, so just let us live off yours for free... ???!!! At first I thought the post was a joke...

I don't live in AK but I stop by this section once in a while because I have Alaska dreams too... OP, you don't have to give up your dream, but you do need to work hard & make it come true on you own if it really means that much to you.

Pretty much what I was going to say, although my wording would have been along the lines of: get a job ya lousy bums, and buy you're own freakin' land like the rest of us schmos
