Somehow I think it'll be a tough sell trying to get the Canadians to fork over their entire pacific coastline.
In any case, its still 4000 miles from where I live to Anchorage, and thats not gonna change much no matter how you route the road. In any case, it sure couldn't hurt to at least get a working railway connection from AK to the rest of the US. Maybe when they build the gas pipeline we can get them to throw in a railroad along the right-of-way. I'm sure my great-great grandkids will be thrilled. ![]() |

Was just kinda sitting here thinking, trying to put myself in Amy's shoes. To her, all of Alaska is a big unknown, so she's relying on our input. Yes, McCarthy sounds great at first: the remote, wild, end-of-the-road town. I have not ever been there, but from what I saw on TV news there might be a problem with it, for someone trying to get away from "guber'mint meddling": the U.S. Park Service. They are there, because there is a park there. They are the ones who gave the Papa Pilgrim bunch so much hassle, about driving that 'dozer across park land, on an old mining road. They will be there, watching 24hrs a day for the slightest little infraction of their "rules". I just can't see wasting time arguing with these types.
For that reason, might be better to have Amy look instead at Copper Center, Gulkana, Talkeetna, Sutton, GlennAllen, or Tok...Whaddya'll think? Ya know guys...still kinda thinking outloud here...she is kinda in "condo-ville" back east somewhere, so I would bet that the Wasilla area would be fairly "wild" in comparison...plenty of mountains, rivers, lakes, woods, etc, in the surrounding areas...not too crowded. A good mix of urban and back woods areas...but it's still on the road system...might be a real good bet. Ok, so it has "wall to wall" stores and malls for a couple mile stretch of the highway, but then there are plenty of "woodsy places", once you drive 10 or 15 minutes out of town, where she could park her camper. To the north-west of town, you can drive for miles and not see anybody. And...let's consider her chosen profession for a minute: the chances of a new small gun and ammo shop succeeding there (Wasilla) would be WAY higher than at the other more remote towns mentioned...lots of shooters, hunters, and outdoor types live there. Just to get started, I bet one of those gun shops there would hire her...because she sounds VERY knowledgable about firearms, ammo, and reloading. And...the Matanuska Valley isn't a bad place to live...it's nice. If'n it was me, that's where I'd be going to open up such a store. Ok...as the game show saying goes: "Wasilla...that's my final answer...". ![]() Amy: I know there are problems getting here, but I think everyone that has lived here for awhile will agree: it's worth it! They don't call it the "Last Frontier" for nothing... Bud Last edited by BudinAk; 06-03-2007 at 03:02 AM.. |

Heya Bud,
Mucho thanko for the info! Yes, it's going to be hard to get there, but I find that intention has a lot of power when focused upon daily. I spend a lot of time researching this, looking over the state on Google Earth, looking for little towns I might want to live in, and making contact with people on the ground there, and planning strategy. I'd certainly like to start my business up again there! Oh boy would I ever! To make PGB Superior fly again, and in Alaska at that, would be a dream come true for me. I have to wonder, how many of those gubmint nazis end up getting shot/disappeared there for harrassing good people just trying to survive? Wilderness is a real bad place to be pulling that kind of trip and I'm sure it's not an unknown thing... About those gun stores, seems to me I could ship a lot of my stuff, powder, ammo, guns, to one of them in advance of moving there, thus removing it from nazi scrutiny during the trip. a. |

If you haven't given up completely on the computer thing, heres a lead on a job. Its a listing on todays version of the Anchorage Daily News, and though its (very) poorly written the hospital in Soldotna is looking for a director of information services. Certainly lot of places on the Kenai where you can get away from it all. Still lots of cheap land inland of Ninilchik and especially around Anchor Point (if you can get there, some pretty iffy roads)
