This is a great book and I think your daughter would love reading it:

Amazon.com: Tisha: The Story of a Young Teacher in the Alaska Wilderness (9780553265965): Robert Specht, Anne Purdy: Books

Something that will also be a very big positive is if you daughter is into sports like basketball, in just about every small Alaskan town/village that is almost the number one sport. They all have gyms of some sort or the other to play in during the winter and much of the town shows up for the home games. If she isn't into sports, it isn't a big deal, but it makes the transition easier.

Well, let's say she tries hard. She's active, but not in a *ahem* physically coordinated type of way. Climbing trees and running through the pines is her thing, but she likes to get on a basketball court every now and again. Perhaps we'll get her to brush up on that.

Thanks for the info.

That's probably far more important. Most people in villages are very closely tied to the environment. It isn't just a few that get out, it's almost everyone. She'll be a little bit "different" until she's been to many of the same nearby locations that all the other young folks are familiar with.

RDawg, Alaskateacher.org has quite a bit of useful info related to teaching in Alaska, including a forum. Your question was addressed in there as well, though not answered in so much detail.

Well she is off on the right foot then. The fact that she likes that type of activies is a very good start and she will fit in just fine with her peers.

Depending on the town/village you are in, the trees may be a bit of an issue, well the lack of them....

Thanks, melbern. ATP does have a good site. I'm registered on that forum as well as on this, and there's lots of good stuff there, but this one gets much more traffic and isn't visited exclusively by educators. I'm looking for the big picture just now.

What?! You mean to tell me that Alaska isn't forested from border to seashore? Well, what's the deal with all the pictures I see online, then?

Sheesh...
