No Coal, No Nuke, No Hydro... they all can be debated upon by the environmentalists... this is Alaska... the Last Frontier ya know. I say put a crap load of Wind Turbine near Cantwell. Evertime I drive through that area it is super windy. Yeah, yeah I know it needs to be a certain kind of wind for wind turbines......yeah....okay....sure.... just like it takes certain water to get wet.

It is impossible for a nation or a community to be fully self sustainable. Look at NATO, first thing we do is put sanctions on countries that do not abide by our rules. I miss Mat Maid milk, it was way more delicious than the imported milk. But with that said I go through 12 Gallons of milk per month and $2.99 to $4.89 per gallon makes an impact on my wallet. How am I supposed to afford the the outrageous price of Alaska's gasoline and natural gas and buy local?

The fact is, if we use energy we need to produce it. There isn't a way to produce energy that is completely clean...at least right now there isn't.

In Alaska, we have huge amounts of coal. I think I heard that we have over 1/2 of all the coal in the US. We out to use at least a little of it to produce energy.

We also have geothermal possibilities, of course, that isn't clean either and I believe the one closest to Anchor Town would be affected by the beluga whale critical habitat issue.

We also have a lot of gas...right now the only evidence of it is in Juneau. But seriously, there is a LOT of natural gas that can produce energy. Of course, you have to drill holes in mother earth to get it, and that doesn't go over well.

Marty,

I agree with you that we have to explore alternative sources of energy such as natural gas. It is true that no source of energy will come 'free' in the sense that there won't be any impact on the environment. But we have to be wise stewards of the planet and look for sustainable consumption.

That's why a lot of us were in favor of the proposed "all Alaskan" natural gas pipeline. Maybe then Hugo Chavez wouldn't have to pay the heating bills of a lot of our bush residents.

Actually, there is a lot more natural gas than just what is on the North Slop er...Slope. There is gas in the Tanana Basin and in the Mat-Su Valley. More than enough for Alaska's needs.

I wouldn't be surprised to find gas close to some of the villages. Anywhere there is coal, there is likely to be gas in enough quantities for local use and perhaps even for export. We just need a little freedom to drill.

On the other hand, if there aren't any exported natural resources, we won't need the energy anyway. We can all go back to burning wood and using blazo...at least the blazo boxes were recyclable.
