Haines is no different from most small towns in Alaska, most all of the basics are readily available except for year-round employment. Housing, groceries, transportation, etc. are all pretty available, what you really need is a decent job. Seasonal work is easy to find in the summer, but wintertimes a different story.
Housing for sale here is pretty sporadic, sometimes there's quite a few homes on the market and sometimes theres almost none. The place really picks up in spring when the tourism based companies start hiring, so if you're in need of a place to rent you'll have an easier time and more selection either in early fall or late winter, before the rush starts. The local singles scene isn't really my speciality, but it seems polarized into two camps: the bars and the churches. There are a lot of other things to do in the community though; workout groups for aerobics, yoga etc., fraternal/booster club dinners and functions, library fund raisers, etc. The main thing is that you've gotta be an outdoors person to really fit in here, the coffee-shop to tackle-shop ratio here is pretty low. If you're the type that can't live without 36 flavors of frozen yogurt and a dozen book stores, your're gonna be pretty disappointed in the long run. |

That just gives you an excuse for a road trip to Whitehorse...Mcdonalds, KFC, Tim Hortons, Baskins Robins and so on.

McDonalds I can take or leave, been there WAY too many times with a tunnel-rat age kid.
Donuts though, are another matter entirely. The only fresh donuts here were at the Chilkat bakery and they've closed down until next spring (much wailing follows). From what the owner said their heating bill last winter was about a thousand bucks a WEEK, and while they've got a good customer base it's hard to cover that on top of the normal expenses. I can't blame 'em, but I'm missing them already and they've only been closed a week. |

MMmmm, donuts. (Slavers, drools ala Homer Simpson). And even though this may be a cross-thread thingie, donuts are another reason I live in a big city. Well, Anchorage, anyway.

It made it hard to sleep in when they would start cooking donuts very early in the morning. |

KFC and Subway were the only "fast food" places we ate at in Whitehorse. Giorgios is probably the best restaraunt there, despite the high prices.
