NOORVIK, Alaska (AP) -- Bobby Wells has lived all his life in this remote Alaska village, where the Eskimo dancing of his ancestors was banned by Quaker missionaries a century ago as primitive idolatry.

Now Wells, 53, and other residents of Noorvik have wholeheartedly embraced the ancient practice outlawed in the Inupiat Eskimo settlement, which was established in 1914.

I read that in the Anchorage Daily News this morning and am glad they have resumed the Eskimo dancing.

It seems that somebody (in this enlightened age) would have howled loudly enough before now to right that particular wrong.

What do y'all figure the chances are that, even in the face of such adversity, the Natives went right on ahead and danced their mukluks off?

even though it isn't technically banned where i live (so far as i know), it still doesn't happen- apparently, nobody remembers how. it's been about 100 years since it was deemed demonic and there are actually quite a few people that still believe that it is evil.
the younger generation seems interested, they just don't know where to start.

I am just amazed at the gall of roving missionaries to have cursed so much of the world with their ridiculous beliefs.

Here in Nenana, they use to bring the native children in from the villages to a church school, many against the parents will, they were beaten if they spoke anything but English. That went on into the 1940's or so, many of the elders over the years told me about the schooling system and how they hated it.

Times change. There are a lot of things from the past we don't like, but such things were normal back then, just like things we do today will seem abnormal in the future. We hopefully learn from our past.

I learned how to dance from the experience of past masters.

Dig it.

Did you learn the Saturday Night Fever dances while the craze was happening or retroactively?

Are we establishing disco legitimacy or are we simply age guessing here?
