Also have the Taurus in 454...8.5 barrel length, they are fun to shoot

First off the Freedom Arms are single-action, next they have a rather light barrel which results in a ton of additional recoil issues vs the Taurus

Ports..FA won't provide them whereas they are standard on Taurus

You can purchase 3 Taurus for the cost of the FA

Ports & a rib barrel makes them much more manageable....

Can I handle that thing? 454 Taurus. I asked my dad about it last year and he thinks it's too much gun for me. Just for the know. I carried and shot a .338 w and shot mostly 250 grain bullets, once in a while a 300 just for bear. Is there any kind of comparison.

Angie...

I'd suggest ya sick to that same gun but in caliber 44 mag...for your particular requirement

Somewhere here it was suggested that fit & feel to the user is very important...that is very good advice

See if Doug has one you can at least look at....if not take a Saturday ferry-ride down to Juneau and Rayco Sales, pretty sure they would have them in both 44 & 454.....maybe call down there in advance

It would be a plus to be able to shoot them prior to purchase...that alone may help you select the correct one for you

an try different grip types and materials as that makes a huge difference in handling a hand gun!

All this stuff said...I'd still go with a Ruger 454 if I were that concerned about bear attacks., but I'm just not that concerned. Common sense is the best preventative weapon.

Once again, brownies are most likely to attack when surprised. The key is to take measures not to surprise them. Duh. I just swat my little blackies away with a rolled up newspaper and by the way, the bearproof dumpster we purchased keeps them out.

Common sense is the best weapon against brownies, once again. The second best is a Ruger 454. Answer your g-damn DMs, by the way.
