Bad Axe , really ? I would think , coming from Alaska, the thumb would be too much of contrast. Much nicer places in Michigan than that. Now , If you are a farmer, and lived in Palmer , Ak. well maybe. On second thought, why leave Palmer , and the valley ? Too each his own..........

I'm 29, single mom, God, I'd give my right arm to live in Alaska.. Any city there for that matter. I love the outdoors, hate the heat. Alaska is perfect for me! Wish it wasn't so darn expensive to get to for even a vacation! I live in Chicago area, it's SO hot in the summer, flat land, no mountains, no nothing out here. Just overpriced house and crappy paying jobs. Anyhow, I would imagine it takes a "special" person to live in Alaska. I get along best with the grubby guys, and have no problem with all the wildlife. The poster doesn't realize, how much those kids would probably love living out there growing up. Growing up in Chicago burbs was no fun what-so-ever. Especially with parents who always wanted to take their kids to uppity hotels and such. Anyhow, good luck with life. You're from Cali, went to Alaska, don't know what else you're looking for. I think no matter where you move, you more than likely won't be happy. You technically had the best of both worlds already. I suggest living in a hee haw trailer in Arkansas or something.

You would love Alaska. It does not take " a special person" , just takes a person that has a romance with adventure, ........enough to have the +++++, to give it a try. You are the right age,...........go for it !

Oh I wish!! I'm divorced and have to stay near the ex for at least another 13 years!! After that, I'm thinking about it. Just wish I did a move that that instead of getting married years ago!

I wouldn't move to Bad Axe either--NO JOBS OVER THERE!!! I'm talking around Lapeer and Oakland counties. Many more opportunities. Of course, the best place for scenery is in the U.P. but then again not many jobs. I guess it depends what your everyday financial needs are in picking the perfect place (let me know if you find it).

6 yrs ago, I moved my self and 2 children (single mom) from my home state of CA, i'd never visited ak and moved here pretty much site unsceen
all of my research was done via computer, I had made a friend on an aol site whose hubby was in the Air Force and they were stationed at Elmendorf, oh she bragged about how RICH the state was, tax free etc....
well, after a 2 yr time living in both Wasilla (3 mo's), then Eagle River, I moved to the Kenai Peninsula, was able to buy my very first home as i'm on a fixed income. well, I am MISERABLE here, not only has it been near impossible to make friends but the schools are terrible and i'm sick & tired of their approach to 'history' as being all exclusively ak native
shopping here consits of driving 3 hours thru a twisty windy treacherous (in winter) road just to get to a walmart
My mind is made up, I want outta here! I refuse to go back to CA, very little relatives there and we are not in the least close, in fact, I have no close friends or family anywhere... but I feel my children deserve to have more opportunities, they are not looking at becoming fisherman or drilling for oil
i've proved I can handle winter only, I want it as a season vs a 9 month sentance. I'm dreaming of the east coast, I don't handle extreme heat and/or humidity well at all because of a medical condition.
So, where would a single, responsible, clean, decent, commited to her family, single mom
move OUT of here to?

I believe that you would like either Springfield, Mo. Or Johnson City, Ten. They are both nice, but if you like cooler, then Johnson City, Tn would be best. It's affordable. Check them both out on Business News and Financial News at Forbes.com. Best wishes. I wish you the best, and your children. God bless. Kellie

Johnson City area ( Tri Cities ) is a good choice. Still the deep south, but tempered by the East Tn. mindset .Go over the mountain, ( new very scenic highway) and you find Asheville, NC. a bit more urban, and progressive.

What kind of work can you do? It sounds like the NE is the place for you. There are many resort/tourist areas that look for good help every year; some are 12 month a year jobs. Most have great schools.
