In other threads, you (and a few other members) seemed to be perfectly comfortable making decisions about how the rest of us should spend our hard earned money to support health care reform. Now you tell us you don't like other people telling you what to do.

I'm only going on what you post here.

Rationalization

In psychology and logic, rationalization (or making excuses[1]) is the process of constructing a logical justification for a belief, decision, action or lack thereof that was originally arrived at through a different mental process. It is a defense mechanism in which perceived controversial behaviors or feelings are explained in a rational or logical manner to avoid the true explanation of the behavior or feeling in question.[2][3] it is also an informal fallacy of reasoning

When we drive through Canada every time this crap happens and guess what ? WELLS FREAKEN FARGO!

Yes, we hate that bank for a multitude of reasons..... (and we use a debit card, not credit, so it IS OUR MONEY!)

We have switched to Alaska USA which did flag our account while we were in Seattle on a trip but instead of just cutting off the card, they called us to ask. Which I thought was nice considering what Wells Piece of Crap Fargo does.

These days all credit cards will not work if you travel to say, another country. It's been like that for a while. Debit cards still work!
You have to call ahead and let them know you'll be traveling.
I've seen it with friends traveling to Europe, same thing happened last month in Dominican Republic- none of the credit cards would work.
Besides this being fraud prevention, it must be the tight money (credit) availiability these days.
It used to be cc companies covered all fraud losses, no questions asked (because there were many questions that should have been asked about their ways of doing business) just to keep these things quiet.

Jenny from WF Financial Bank gets on the line says it flagged because i rented a car and a hotel out of my home area. I say well Jenny that is generally what people do when they travel. I say so when I change states on a trip you want to call you and let you know I am travelling (polite) and she says yes. I say well Jenny is that so atypical as to stop an activity. she says we are loaning you this money...I ask her to take the gum out of her mouth and ask for her super. she says "FINE".

Next is Kyle who tells me that they are within their rights and I say since you have forgotten who the customer is and other things he says do you want me to release the hold on the account so the hotel can charge the card. i say not needed already charged and he says that is impossible and i say well apparently Marriott knows what customer service is...and he liked stunned that it went through..... and then I hear this beep every 5 seconds and I ask Kyle are you recording this call (which is ok with me) and he says no then he hears the beep and comes unglued freaks saying to me to turn off the recording and I say not me doing it dude, must be Marriott. I almost used the line from Taken "i have a very particiular set of skills aquired over a long career that make me a nightmare for people like you" but instead I say. Kyle youre f'n with the wrong cowboy and he is still freakin about the recording......that was funny.

has anyone else been told to call in when you are changing states? I mean going to another country I can see (I plan to followup with someone with a brain on Monday) note Wells Fargo Bank is Not Wells Fargo Financial............anyway thanks for reading....vent halfway done.
It's not a bad idea to let your card companies know when you are going to be traveling out of state. It's not uncommon for them to put a hold on funds in the case of unusual activity.

But...the call should have fixed it.

I have found the customer service at WF to be appallingly unprofessional. I got locked out of my account because I put the PIN to another account in three times. Phone call should have fixed that but...no. I was unable to use that account for about a month, and it was a debit account. Finally my banker called them when I was right there in her office and they still wanted to play games. They wanted me to sign up for some stupid crap that would have left my account flagged and would have necessitated them calling me before any major purchase would be "authorized". I don't spend much time hanging around telephones waiting for the bank to call to let me know it's okay to spend my own money so I told them I'd be closing my account so then they shut up.

You'd be suprised how often this hapens. I had the same thing with a bank manager. One morning I check my acct balance but an hour later all the funds are unavailiable. Because the check I deposited was determined suspicious. So first I have the funds availiable and than they freeze it for like 10 days. The attitude I got was " we have the right to do it". Well, I have the right to close the account. Not an unusual amount, not a new customer. Go figure.

When you stop and think about it though. They are simply trying to make sure it's YOU that is receiving the product. I bet all this is spelled out in the Terms of Service agreement they gave you when you signed up for the card.

I've had it happen to me before and it didn't bother me. I was impressed that they had safeguards in place that at least attempted to prevent fraudulent activity.

The changes are not made with you, the customer in mind:

The credit limits on Brown’s cards have been lowered, which has raised his debt relative to his available credit. This so- called utilization rate is a key factor in determining credit scores. Brown, a 58-year-old construction company owner in San Diego, has seen his credit score drop to 650 from 760 over the past 13 months.
“Interest rates on all of my cards are going up now and my minimum payments are almost doubling because it looks like I’ve maxed out my cards,” said Brown, who uses credit cards to fund his home-building company. “It’s a Catch-22.”
