Well, my husband spoke with the interviewer for the Hope school and found out he was interviewing for 2 positions in Kenai as well. He had a first round interview and we are both flying up next Thurs so that he can have a second round interview. Hope is out of the picture now. He also has an interview for 3 positions in Wasilla and 1 in Palmer, as well as 1 in Anchorage. So it looks like my ability to find a job has now become easier. Do you have any suggestions of a good hospital to work for? My girlfriend worked for Prov for 7 years and loved it. I am a labor nurse and lactation consultant but am willing to work in whatever unit will hire me, within reason.

That will be something you can pick from when you get here, they all need help and pay bonuses to get new blood you might say...

When you talk with them, tell them you still live down south and they will pay you to move up as well as a bonus. Don't tell them you are following your husband here, let them make a deal with you, about you.

Thanks Starlite!! Good to know!! We only have 7k saved up because my husband has been out of work here for 2 yrs as the teaching professions in Oregon have been in the toilet. Any amount for relocation would help!!

I'd be a little leery about doing double dipping since both positions could get some of their funding through government grants and you'll have to report the relocation pay on your tax return. If it comes up there might be some unneeded consequences. And if it involved a conspiracy to defraud the feds it might be something you can't afford. Inquire in some manner to find out if the bonuses are part of any federal grant.

When they hire you, and you live down South, there is nothing wrong with both husband and wife getting paid to move to Alaska. At the worst, they may not be able to write off all the moving expenses with the money that was paid to them. Not a big deal, just pay the taxes due.

If they were both working for the same company and getting transfered, that may be an issue, but two different entities paying for moving costs to get new employees is a good deal and that is why they do it. For Nurses, the sign bonus pay and moving is something like $16,000.00 or so to move to Alaska from places like OK or AR... They pay well because there is a shortage of help in that field. The grants won't make a bit of a issue, if there is even any to start with. Course if they can get you here for free, the better for them.

They pay from the point of hire, and if that is from the lower 48, then that is where the pay is from, if it is in Anchorage, then you get nothing. So tell them where you live now in the States, once you move here, that ace is gone.

Definitely something to think about. I didn't think that hospitals used gov grants to pay relocation. I thought that came out of their budget. I will have to do my research.

The Hospitals in Anchorage typically pay $10K per year bonus plus relocation and you commit to stay and if you don't you pay a prorated amount back which also includes the taxes they paid and which never came to you. It's not in concrete and I do know families who have left who have not do to circumstances had their bonuses forgiven. Providence is the toughest though.

Has anyone heard if Mat-Su Regional offers relocation asst. ? My other question, which is nursing specific, are there some specialties that offer relocation and others that don't? Like Med Surge or other short areas? My area is OB and I have 9 yrs experience but I don't know how saturated they or any area hospital is with OB nurses.

Well if you are living near Hope your options are a bit reduced. The larger hospitals, Providence, Alaska Regional and Alaska Native all offer bonus and relo for most positions. Experienced nurses are a real plus. Mat Su is near Palmer and quite a jog from Hope about 40 miles north of Anchorage. Smaller and more regional the hospital has a HR dept that has "issues". Many Tribal entities also hire nurses in the bush and they are very interested in OB nurses with experience however that can put you out in the bush far away from Hope.

Bethel, Kotzebue, Nome, and Barrow are the "bigger" villages. Most are accessible only by airplane during most of the year. Tribals pay well with bonuses as well but the nurses who sign on want a remote experience e.g. limited shopping severe winters etc..........

just read your post about an updated location. Hard to say your area is very specialized........I would think that Providence might your best bet as they have the children's hospital and most of the tough births go there and Prov is very well connected to services in the community. downside is Prov can be very formal and health benefits at Prov cannot compare to the benes at Regional or Native. Both Prov and Regional are union so pay is standardized. Native is not union and pays a skosh less however the environment if you enjoy native cultures is wonderful.
