Question Info needed on Sand Point, AK

My name is alena maggard and myself along with 9 other people will be traveling to sand point, ak in july to host a camp for youth. We are all very excited but are still unsure of what to expect. we have done much research and still have not found one needed piece of information. What do the kids of Sand Point like to do. and what are some things that we should know before entering this world that we are not customed too.

If you are with an organization, they should have information for your trip. Traveling from KY to AK is expensive, especially in state travel in Alaska.

I have lived in Sand Point since 1988, and have some knowledge of the kids and their habits. Now, I'm 60, and haven't much first hand information, but the following are my impressions from observation and second hand info. They may be worthless, but I doubt that.

First, Fishkilla is correct, so far as he goes. It's cars, basketball, sex, drugs, alcohol, and being spoiled. A great many, so far as I can tell, of the young folks here are so spoiled that they can get away with nearly anything, and that's no exaggeration.

Also, the parents of too many shelter their kids from just about everything, so the young ones have little experience of the vicissitudes of life. IMO, they are unprepared for reality, are allowed to be unruly, and thus their parent's care is in the long run very harmful to them. Far too many of them are not ready for life.

I presume you shall work in the Bible Camp, or similar. In that environment, I'd expect things to be better, but you can bet your booty that if, for any reason, you feel it necessary to discipline the kids, the parents will jump all over you. It's happened before and will happen again, I'm sure. Being neither Christian nor involved in this project, the above cannot be considered perfectly accurate, but IMO you better be prepared for confrontation - if you feel it necessary to discipline the unruly.

Food and rent here are VERY expensive, though rents maybe not so bad as in the Lower 48. Gasoline, while expensive, is not so much as, say, Southern California. The weather is generally overcast and cool, with frequent rain and common storms of often great severity.

If you wish to walk around town, be aware that you need not fear the loose dogs. The dogs around here are among the best and nicest I've ever seen. Don't know why; they just are.

Altogether, I expect you to have a pleasant summer, with all the fresh salmon you can eat, but be prepared for confrontation concerning children's discipline.

Anyway, that's a quick overview of mine personal opinion, and if you have specific questions, do not hesitate to ask.
