I have to laugh at the lower 48'ers who think we get paid to live in Alaska. We live in Alaska because we love it. For those who simply move here to collect PFD money, you're in for a shock. You'll pay more ...in gas, oil, groceries and housing. So do yourself a favor, don't move for the PFD. To do so you may find yourself homeless real quick. There is no "quick buck" in this world....you want money for living in Alaska....then get a job and you'll get a regular paycheck. It's called "earning" your money.

Well if you are a "Welfare Rat" or "Foodstamp Pioneer" you get paid even more than that, but they do that in all the states... That way they don't have to move here....

The PFD is paid out on how the stock market did, over a five year cycle. I figure that this last one will be almost matched this next time and then dive like a rock because of this last year (or it may be so bad it effects this next year's early). Regardless, there is a lot of fraud where people live out of state and receive it. The State is cracking down on those people and has a reward program for turning them in. Same as someone shooting game illegally.

Needless to say, the PFD check is nice, but don't go very far unless you run a pawn shop and everyone comes back to pay their loans off... This year it was enough to buy a snowmachine or fourwheeler for a family and they did a lot of that.

With the stock market taking a dive...I'm sure the PFD will be at a record low next year. That will hurt those that come here thinking they are gonna have it made.

This is not likely for two reasons. First, the PFD is based on a 5 year average of earnings, so the effect of one bad year changes the amount available only in relation to the year dropping off. If it was a bad year 5 years ago, we can see an improvement in the amount available. Second, the dividend calculation is not based on the market value of the fund. It's based on realized earnings. So while the fund may show an income loss, realized earnings can be very positive and if it's greater than what it was 5 years ago, we'll see an increase in the amount available.

Alaska does pay people to live here. I saw it on the Simpson's movie, so it MUST be true.
