These are some good questions, but you're looking in a state that has about a one quarter of the the landmass of the lower 48. It's over twice as big as Texas. Climate differs from area to area. Ditto crime, schools and pay varies as widely as the towns.

If you could, set aside an area you're thinking about, and people will be happy to answer the q's. I live in South Central, in Anchorage. Questions about Anchorage can be answered by a half a dozen of us here. Questions about the Kenai, also south-central, can be answered by that guy Rance or Bud. Others are experts on the other areas.

.....and if you rolled it out flat, it would be over three times as big as Texas.

It might help to know where you are coming from to help compare. Most people do not beleive that Anchorage has better weather than the North Centreal and North East States in the lower 48.

For example if you were moving to Anchorage from Wisconsin you would actually get much better weather in Anchorage. That being: not as cold, less snow, no tornadoes. Abchorage weather is almost comparable to Northern WA. It does snow a bit more and winter is longer but all and all it's not that different.

If you were looking at Fairbanks though that's a whole other story.

Go to the Alaska part of the forum. Within that you will find all the towns and villages (ok the so called cities too) in AK. You can find pretty much the data you need there. You can go back through the older threads and find alot of info most of us have given in the past. Believe me there is alot to tell, and it's time consuming and redundant to repeat ourselves. No offense, just we've been through this a dozen times in the last 6 months! Also some info here: The State of Alaska

Hope this helps...
