I don't think it's about xenophobia so much, Xa'at...it just gets tiring to hear people say that they know what it's like here because it's the same in their part of the lower 48.

It certainly gets cold in parts of Outside and lots of places have worse winters than we have in SE.

But Glitch has some good points, it's about distances and isolation and the sheer length of the winters, not to mention the darkness.

Parts of the lower 48 can are places you can certainly give your heart to--I really love farmland, the smell of ripe apples in the wind, et al.

You can give your heart to the north, I suppose, if that is what you want to do. But it doesn't want your heart. It may want your soul, and if it does, it will merely take it and you'll have little choice in that. Try to give it your soul though...and most likely it will throw it back at you. The McCandless' of the world would probably tell you that if they only could. Oh... that's right. They have.

Xenophobic...not quite, Xa'at, just a very close cousin, and it's exactly how it's supposed to be.

They lied. I swallered a dictionary as a child and have suffered ever since. People stare strangely as I walk past them on the street muttering multi-syllabic obscenities and scatological comments to myself. You would think I was using bad language!

If anything, what was posted readily understates the reality. Yes, it's true, and then some.

It's good advice for women, children and anyone else to rethink their fantasy about moving to Alaska. Alaska is not the idealized vision so many harbor for it.

Aw, buck up. If it's someone's fantasy to live in Alaska, they should do it. It's not like once you step off the plane you are trapped there forever. Taking chances is what life's all about.
Where are you from, anyway?

People are free to choose as they may, but an informed choice is usually preferable to the alternative.

Informed decisions usually allow those same fantasy harboring individuals the ability to avoid having too much unwished for reality having the opportunity to intrude on their fantasy.
