Default passport aplication to get accross CA border

I have been told by 2 seperate sources that passpost will be required to cross the border starting in sept, and that even to cross now you need to show that you have applied for one is this true!!
my sources were Mom and a good friend and I suspect they got their info from the boob tube as neither have travled more than 100 miles from home in years

Well you might swing into a local post office for an app and some current info.

Check online. Do a search on google for the website: "apply for passport" or something along those lines.

Yes, the rules are getting very stringent on crossing the border, even Canada. However, I heard on the news recently that the rules are changing again to ease the strain on getting out passports on time to travelers.

Also, you can check with your travel agent. I'm sure they would have the most up-to-date info!

It is true that you will need to supply a copy of your passport application at the border ut it's beginning July 1, 2007. It's fairly simple to cross as long as you follow the posted rules.

U.S. Citizens with Pending Passport Applications Allowed Temporary Travel Flexibility

I believe the passport requirement is only for air travel into Canada, for now anyway. Above is a link to the U.S. State Department's page regarding passports. Even if it isn't required for driving through Canada, I've found it to be much easier entering Canada and back into the USA with a passport.

Just a tip , go to the passport site
Passport Home
put in your zip code and see if there is a County Clerk office where you can apply. We went to our and had no wait. I have heard horror stories that people have arrived at some Post offices at 9 am only to be told they have enough people already in line to fill the day.
When we applied in May we were told 10 to 12 weeks. Now with the change I will have to go see if I kept our reciept in case ours doesn't get here by Aug 30th

Here is the site to check the status of your passport app. It also gives you the info on printing the proof of application

Checking the Status of Your Application

You do NOT need a passport to cross the Canadian border by vehicle or boat until Jan 2008.

You need a passport or passport application if traveling by air into Canada, or more importantly- back out of Canada.

But don't wait - it WILL be required - posted processing time on the Passport web site is 10-12 weeks. And as for paying $60 for expedited - it meant that it only took us 8 weeks to get it.
