Well, I agree with others who show caution when children are involved. Once one has children, one better be prepared before moving to Alaska or anywhere else far away. It's that simple, no "but" about it.

Yes, Ray, I completely agree. But the OP didn't tell us enough about herself for us to be assuming she's moving up on her last dime. For all we know she's from Anchorage or some such and has been going to school in FL. Nursing school isn't at all easy to get into, and it doesn't seem to be a profession that attracts the irresponsible.

I don't know that it matters because she's probably fled this forum by now, but maybe the benefit of the doubt is in order here. Just because she asked about "economical" housing doesn't mean that she's dragging up in a welfare-mobile.

Got it. I understand your point, Met.

I'd love to head up there, have been hemming and hawing over it, but I really do worry about the economy. It's really, really bad down here, and I don't have any good information on how bad it is in Alaska. I do fret that you guys may be behind us in the path of pain, and that now is a terrible time for a move. The media and government are not being honest in their assessment of the recession (depression). I have some cash, not as much as I would like, but enough to get up there and support myself for several months with zero income, especially since I have a good truck and travel trailer, and can eat and live on the cheap. Some home cooked beans and rice, and vegetables will keep me going. My 130 pound beast sure does eat his share though.

I'm left with the realization that there will always be questions and the old saying holds true: you never know until you try.

If you aren't happy there you should just come on up. You've been planning for a while and you seem to have your head on your shoulders. Just do it! Time's a wasting. I spent 25 years wanting to be back!

LOL, I thought I wrote that for a minute. Except I don't have a travel trailer and my yorkie only weighs 12 lbs. Job sites don't give a true report, example, the ones local always have a ton advertised, but 9/10 are a scam, I know from experience. The government says there are X amount of new jobs, they don't tell you that those are only minimum wage at the local veggie stand. Lot to think about. But it is true....you never know

I thought I had written much of that as well.

I worried about the same kinds of things. My job was pretty secure down in Tennessee and it seemed counter-intuitive to pull up stakes and move all the way to Alaska in such a bad economy.

I came with a job, and had enough money and backup to head home if it went bad.

I don't really know how things are in the rest of this state, but there are a good number of jobs here in Juneau. We may or may not be behind the curve, but I don't think that it will get anywhere near as bad here as it has in some of the places down in the lower 48. It is heartbreaking to see how badly towns and families have been decimated by the recession.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, everyone. I am not allowed to give lyoness or gobrien rep points, must "spread it around" first, for whatever reason.

Not trying to hijack the OP's thread, just have some of the same questions she does. Anytime you see me posting at 2:47 am, it means the hamster wheels in the head are turning, and I'm not getting any sleep. Several days a week I'll get a "good" 3 hours a night, last night being one of them.
