We are 4 mom's looking for mini trip ideas less than 4 hours away from Albany. A place with a little bit of night life, not that any of us has seen the inside of a club/bar for several years, so nothing crazy. We are hoping to eat some good food, maybe swim (pool, lake, ocean), shopping (window shopping more likely) and just hang out. We have decided not to do NYC, Montreal (no passports for some of us) and Boston. If you have had good experiences with lodging please do tell.

Sorry - replied and realized you said you didn't want to do NYC!

What about the Poconos? Always resort type lodging and activities to be had there.

You could go up north to Lake Placid, that's such a great little town with swimming, shopping and great views.

Burlington, VT is also a really neat place to visit.

Try Sylvan Beach between Syracuse and Rome. It's on Oneida Lake and has a cute little amusement park and main street with restaurants and a couple of bars. For lodging, you might have to look in Canastota, Camden or Oneida. It's a hidden gem for a nice little getaway for a day.

There's also the Turning Stone Casino close by, which has some good restaurants as well. That is located in nearby Verona.

Portsmouth, NH? Nice beaches. Kittery Outlets in Maine, a stone's throw away.

Have you thought of Mystic, Conn? There are several motels/hotels there, some with pools, I usually stay at the Days Inn, it's nice and quiet, with a decent sized outdoor pool, but I'm sure other hotels in the area are even nicer. There are some cute shops in Mystic, and it's very scenic there along Long Island Sound.and you can take a short drive and go over to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos for more shopping, gambling, etc. Foxwoods has Bingo games going on morning and evening with some big prizes, a player can even win a car, Foxwoods Bingo is a lot of fun, even if you aren't into gambling. Mohegan Sun has a South-beach styled nightclub called Ultra 88, and several bars/lounges all over. You can drive into Newport, RI from Mystic and see the shops, museums, mansions, etc. It seems like the Mystic, Ct. area would be a good fit for what you are looking for in a mini-vacation.

I just returned from a family trip to Lake George, we had such a good time swimming in the lake and hotel pool, shopping, eating good food, visiting the water parks, and enjoying the wonderful scenery that my niece wants me to take here there again to see the fall leaves in a few months. I enjoyed Bolton Landing also, it was so relaxing and quaint, I can't wait to go back to Lake George myself!

Mystic is a great idea! It's definitely under 4 hours and a perfect place to head to.... from the scenery to the casinos and aquarium. FUN!

Thumbs up to Mohegan Sun. Lived in CT for 3 years down the road and went there whenever we had free time. They were just building the hotel onto it at that point.
