Default Clifton Park/Surrounding Area Section 8 Apt Needed

Hi --

Trying to help a friend find a Section 8 apartment in Clifton Park-Malta-Halfmoon-Crescent-Waterford-Rexford-Burnt Hills area. It's a mother, age 56, receiving Social Security Disability, and a daughter, age 23, who is also unable to work for other medical reasons. They need 2 bedrooms, 1 bath. No dogs or cats but they do have a caged guinea pig. Both are total homebodies and immaculate housekeepers. Many of the complexes that accept Section 8 seem to have waiting lists so it would be good to hear from some individual owners.

I wonder if Ballston Spa or Saratoga Springs have something too?

I know the family has always been more oriented toward southern Saratoga County and would like to exhaust any possibilities there first.

Check Mechanicville, they have a lot of Section 8 there, and many are private landlords.

How do you know if it is legit or not? Maybe there are mental issues or it involves something like autism, which is on the rise. So, who knows?

You're right, it could be legit, and if it is, I apologize. It just seems very suspect that both mother and daughter are claiming disability. I've been around Section 8 people and usually the entire family claims some sort of disability to increase gov't handouts each month.

I wondered if you could get Section 8 in that area and in other metros, you can find apartments in some suburbs. I've heard mixed reviews in terms of safety and conditions, relative to the rest of said area too. Unfortunately, the handful of abusers can give those that are legit a bad rep and we see this in many facets of life/society. So, I understand the suspicion as well.

With that said, I'm wondering if places like Watervliet, Cohoes or Mechanicville would work for the family, as they have housing authorities. http://www.watervliethousing.org/

Default Thanks for all the helpful suggestions

I believe the family has found something.

As to whether the disability is legit or not, I cannot say. Am not a doctor but always heard that it was difficult to be accepted for Social Security Disability. The mother was accepted about a year ago.

The daughter appears to be intellectually able but has had undiagnosed emotional issues since childhood. Never attended a school function, had a date or any type of social life, never obtained a driver's license, or participated in sports, etc.

Doubt that she would live this way if she had a choice.

On the positive side, they are excellent tenants. The share of the mother's income that they must pay under Section 8 is never late, they do not entertain but live quietly, and their household is always immaculate. Wish all the tenants that I had when I owned rental property were as good.

Hopefully, they are all set for at least a year.

With much appreciation.

Hi, I am a 55yr. old female that is disabled. I rec. help from Hud for my rental. I have been trying to find a safe place to live to be near my daughter, who lives in Malta. I have Excellent references (landlords hate to lose me as a tenant). I have been very unsuccessful finding a place because I have my dog...who I consider family. All the places eithier say...only cats, or they cant be over 50lbs., which leaves me out. My dog is a bigger dog, older, who sleeps most of the time. They never seem to care about the excellent references, if they did, they would see that there was never a problem. I keep my home immaculate, rent pymt is never late. Please, is there a landlord out there that would please give me a chance? My daughter is all I have left, I just want to be close to her. If you would just read what my past landlords have stated about me, I'm sure I would be your ideal tenant. Please, just give me that chance. Thank you.

The solution is staring you in the face - get rid of the dog if your daughter means so much to you. If you need the dog to help with your disability, then the landlord in required to accommodate you and your dog under ADA.
